Unorthodox Racing Pulley

I was just wondering if anyone has done this for the VG. Any real HP gains from it.

lol, i almost bid on that just on principle. i knew it was going to go for cheap. i almost drove up the price just for the hell of it. then i realized i'd have no use for it if i won, and i'd probably be outbidding a fellow orger. i bought mine at full retail price plus shipping a bunch of years ago.

UR was the only option for vg's, but i think ve's had 2 or 3 options (cheaper too)

Yes...it's not UR that makes them tho, it's some other company...can't think of the name off the top of my head...

I have a UR pulley and think it's great...WAY lighter than the stock pulley, and the engine revs noticeably faster...

no, UR made them for the VE's as well. it's just that ASP made one for half the price. UR gave the choice of different colors, though. i'm not sure if ASP ever did. i remember the ASP pulley being under $100 and people selling their used ones for ~$50.

also, if memory serves me correctly, the ASP pulley had some kind of a design flaw

I don't think UR make pulley for VE, may be in the past but not any more. So ASP is our only choice for us VEs.
I too am in the market for a UDP for my car, as soon as i solve my engine problem that i post on another post.

The earlier versions leaked oil at the seal from the seal wearing on the aluminum crank. You could send them in to ASP and they would fix it for free by putting on a steel sleeve. I sent mine a long time ago in and it hasn't leaked at all. I am pretty sure they probably put a sleeve on all of the new ones. That was back in 03 or 04 that people were getting the leak.

Anyone have real numbers as far as hp/tq improvement goes? And does installing it REALLY mean no more ac?? If nForce was serious, I'm sorry for asking again, but i don't know what is supposed mean..

The ratio between pulleys changes, so a 15% might mean your AC will make 15% less revolutions per engine revolution than it did before, depending on how they measure 15%. Everything should still work fine, and everyone who has a UDP says everything still works fine. I dont have one but am installing it soon.

Under Drive Pulley: it "under-drives" compared to before.

My AC works fine. I think some people have milled off the AC ribs from the UDP and took off the AC components (compressor) to increase hp to the wheels. Basically, just running a PS pump and alternator.

Everything on my car works as normal.

Power losses from the A/C are somewhat noticeable but typically no more than 12hp. The only time you'll find the A/C not operating as well as it did stock would be when at idle. As for your alternator, I'd be inclined to keep a close eye on this as running the A/C at idle means your alternator isn't producing as much beef either and this could end up costing you a flat battery on short trips.

To resolve that, I got a higher output alternator which I had to get repaired because the original supplier built it to be 90A (idle) and 180A (max speed) with a custom machined pulley about 25% smaller than the OEM alternator pulley but when I handed it into my local auto electrician we discovered he installed a cheap and nasty voltage regulator and the rectifiers were gone as well - all within almost 2 months or so from the day I received it. The smaller alternator pulley makes up for the loss I would otherwise experience at idle although it has managed to eat through a belt at around 5000kms because I suspect the 4 edges for the belt ribs appear to be a little sharper than typical. If it chews through another belt, I'll whack the pulley on a lathe and lightly sand down the edges to dull them down a little.

Thanks Mr. Irraggi.

In summary, the Unorthodox Racing pulley is well worth it and you will notice the difference off the line more than any other time. Just keep an eye on your battery voltage.

Correction

they did make "one" for the VE, I have the prototype still installed. I was the guinnea pig, where they took the measurements and we did before and after dyno runs. It makes around 10hp and 10lb tq. I have the dyno sheet somewhere, maybe I'll dig it up. They never put it into production, I had serious issues with the person who worked on my car (the same person who designed the pulley).

wierd. i guess i must have read about this in one of your threads or something. i could have sworn that the VE had more than one option for UDP's, though

eric93SE: i'm curious. were there any actual problems with the pulley? or did you just have some personal problems with the guy? just wondering why they never went into production

UR doesn't make a UDP for the VE, and they appear to have stopped making it for the VG
