Need suggestions for stereo replacement

I've been thinking of replacing my original stereo for some time now, since it doesn't seem to like any of the CDs I put in it. Besides, I want something from the 21 century, so I can listen to MP3 CDs and maybe even DVDs. Any suggestions as to what to look for will be greatly appreciated.

question I have the BOSE and it works great. However I hear they tend to crap out , whick is understandable at the car's age. If I go with an aftermarket head unit and 4 new speakers is there a harnes I can use or do I need run wires?

my head unit is a Sony MEX-R5 and it's CD, DVD, MP3, ATRAC3, and WMV compatible.....even has a wireless video transmitter, L and R RCA's, SUB RCA's, and VIDEO components.

had it for two years, it's awesome.

look for something that has CONTROLS that you like.
Personally I prefer old school ***** to modern buttons. That is the reason I tend to stay OE on my HUs when I can.

I personally have had nothing but bad luck with Sony stuff. I currently have a Panasonic, and it is a great unit.

I love my headunit. They discontinued it in stores due to age. But it still blows away most $250 head units I've played with in Bestbuy any day.

Pros:
GREAT Sound Output (Made my speakers sound like a different pair)
Gold Plated Pre-Amps
Graphical Display (Can Change to almost any color and you can upload gifs and jpegs)
Looks Clean
Has a VERY adjustable EQ. With separate Subwoofer controls.
Great read out of Albums and Stuff-- Displays immediately

Cons: Hard to see the clock when it's on the Album display mode if the sun is on it.

JVC KD-LH810

If you have Bose, you will need to replace all of the speakers, as well as the HU.

You can use existing wires, but they are pretty crappy.

I would recommend building or buying speaker pods for the front to fit 6.5s and then replacing the Bose 6x9s with something better for the rear in the same size (6x9). As for the pods, James92SE used to make them, but I am not sure if he still does. I thought somone had them on ebay, too. You can also make them if you have some woodworking skills and a bit of free time.

Personally, I wired an amp from the trunk with RCAs from the HU going back to the trunk and speaker wire going back up to the front doors. I also used existing wire for the 6x9s. Then, I added a sub to the trunk.

If you want to go with a sub now or later, I would definitely recommend a HU that has 3 sets of pre outs (front, rear, sub) so it's a lot easier to run a sub. Other than that, buying a HU is all about taste, preferences and price range. I have always had good luck with Alpine, but I have owned older Sony Mobile ES and Rockford Fosgate HUs with no problems.

If you want to go cheap on rear speakers, I have a set of Infinity Reference 6x9s I just swapped out of mine for Polks. Send a PM if interested.

Good stuff. Keep em coming. Pioneer seems kinda expensive though at $500+. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. But something below $250 would be nice and if possible something that would take up most if not all of the space that the original stereo takes up. And whatever the case, I'm still gonna have to do one hell of a rewiring job, right? I don't suppose they sell special conversion harnesses that could make it easier?

Most pioneer head units are under $250,many local retailers carry them so threir really is no need to order one unless you just like to do it that way.

Examples:

Walmart pioneer products-->http://walmart.scosche-cars.com/prod...=24_0&sfID1=24

Wiring adapter needed for aftermarket hu replacement--> http://www.scosche.com/scosche/connectors/NN02.asp This is usually available at autozone or oyher major auto parts stores.

When It comes down to car audio it depends on how deep you want to go. as for head units (novice) I would go with kenwood. The better the head unit the more the price is gonna change. If you want I can get a list of good and bad hu. or other audio equip.

Hmm. The 94maxshima's JVC looks pretty good. And the ustfdes's Sony is not bad for the price either. But what exactly does a wireless video transmitter do? I mean what else would I need to actually make use of that transmitter? I couldn't find any pioneer 4600MEPs anywhere. But I didn't even think of looking at WalMart site. They actually have something worthwhile there, as far as I can tell.

The link might not work, but the thing I found is called XOvision In-Dash DVD/TV/Multimedia Receiver, XOD1911. If anyone has it I'd like to know if it's worth the price. Otherwise I'll look into that Sony MEX-R5 or JVC KD-LH810.
