Well guys, i need someone to make me custom door brackets to hold my 6.5 inch speakers. I was thinking that someone here could take apart thier door, measure how big it should be, cut the holes to fit and send it here. Im willing to pay a nice amount for them as well. Anyone intrested?

 

I'd do it for you, but I dont have any experience with the 3rd gen. I've built a couple fiberglass ones for 4th gens.....

 

Yah, me too. And my door is a long way from stock so I would have no template even for a 4th gen. Where are you?

 

i have some custom brackets for 6.5" speakers. there is a clearance problem with the door panel. what needs to be done is move the top of the speaker holder down by 1/8" - 1/4". willing to sell them for shipping + what i paid for them.

keep in mind that what i paid was about $20 in parts and a case of beer to please my friends father, who made them for me with all his shop tools. Want 'em? let me know.

 

Keeping that in mind the raw materials should cost less than a 6 pack of average beer. Park a third gen in my driveway and I'll do it for $5.00. That includes an MDF mounting ring with good silicone or fiberglass seal to the door and a good gasket surface for mounting the 6.5 inch driver.

 

$5? i'll pay you double that for mine. with all the mdf and metal brackets i went through, i'd be pleased to have nicer speakers up front, but the clearance wasn't right. where you at, jmax? maybe you'll have your first customer- i'll hang the old ones on my wall as a reminder to my bad engineering skills.

I have some 1/2" mdf plates that you could have for the cost of shipping, say $10 US. I believe they are cut out for 6.5" speakers already.....

Thanks to everyone who replied. But i wanna make sure everyone is on the same track. When i had my pannels off a while ago, i decided to take off the WHOLE BOSE housing and it left a fatttttt *** hole in my door Im mean, im sure this door is like 1 square foot or so. I was thinking the custom 6.5 inch panel would screw right into where the holes were already made for the BOSE housing. Meaning that all i need to do is screw them in and thats it?

The Sleeper, will these pannels work like i described or do i need to drill new holes in my door? Also, i dont know how much you paid for them for i need to get the price range. Let me know on that.

well, the pods have a minor fitment problem. the way they were designed, they screw right into the origional holes, with the back of the bose pod behind them, so no rain can get in. i had them on for a few days but when i went to put the door panel on, it overlaps by 1/4-1/8 ". i didn't really feel like i wanted to cut the door panel, so i put the stockers back in. if you want to snip the plastic a bit, they're yours for shipping only- maybe everyone can benefit from the mistakes i made with the pods and design a similar pod with the correct dimensions. i'd be glad to get ahold of plans for a pod that fits the bose opening.

 

Andrew, I made some panels like you are descibing for my '97 Dakota. I no longer have the Dakota but do have the panels. This however will not help you. If the door surface is flat or close to flat it is easy to do with MDF.

 

actually, you can't build the panels out of nothing but mdf. where the Bose pods screw into the doors, the 3/4" would be too much as the door panel comes very close to the metal of the inner door. what you recommend is good. MDF is better material, but you need some sort of thin wooden or metal tabs on the top. on the bottom, you have plenty of space to work with, so MDF would work fine there. trust me, i had my poor 3-rd gen apart for 3 months before i gave up and went back to Bose.

 

You could grind or sand down the MDF thinner than 3/4 inches but I wouldn't personally because the strength would decrease by magnitudes. So I would use a combo of MDF and fiberglass, aluminum, or steel. I would have to see the door to decide and would build it based on what I saw. This would probably be less than $2 retail in additional materials.

 

The baffles I have fit over the stock opening in the sheetmetal. It doesn't fit the factory holes however but you can affix them with sheetmetal screws....

 

well, again i appriciate all the reply's but i still dont have a person who is willing to make them for me?! or maybe im misunderstanding you guys. Ill buy the ones that are already made if they can perfectly fit my 6.5 inch speakers (MB Quarts 6.5 DKDs) and they screw in easily and wont disturb the fitment of the door pannel or anything. I have told you at least once I will make them but I need a 3rd gen to use as a template. I have a 4th gen and the doors are so built up there is no way to tell what stock used to be. Drive on over to my place.

 

The ones I have will fit behind the factory door panel without any modifications....

I'll have to measure them to make sure they will fit your MB Quarts though. what is the cutout diameter you require?

 

hold up just a second! ya know... if you have a pod that will fit a 6.5, make a few pairs- i'm sure you could sell them and cover your costs, or share the plans so people can make their own. i know i'd put some money down to have my Infinity 6.5's up front. please let us know if you can make more!

It's not a speaker pod per se. basically just a flat speaker baffle made out of 1/2" MDF that's cut and shaped to fit a 3rd gen..... Nothing special really and I wouldn't duplicate these ones as they were my first attempt a long time ago, and are very rough....
