The purpose of an aniversary edition in my oppinion, is a model that is especially made to stand out from all the other models created. The aniversary edition celebrates the aniversary of the car by putting out a model that will endure in grace and power as did the years that car was beeing produced.
For Nissan to make an aniversary edition for the Maxima to celebrate its many years in production, I think that AE should stand out above all maximas that has been produced and even the ones that haven't been produced. In reality the 2002 Maxima SE should be the Aniversary edition. Since it has 255 hp and will be the last maxima to be made in the Mid-size category. It is the Maxima that everybody is going to remember because it is most unique maxima made yet, with 6 speed and the big V6 powering it and for a cheaper price, 25,000 compared to AE with 29,000. So to all you AE purchasers, I empathize with you. The 2001 AE is already forgotten, and it just been a year because the 2002 Maxima is casting a shadow that will only grow more through time. 2002 Maxima will be the legendary car that everybody will remembered , and as for the AE, it really wasn't an aniversary edition, it was the pre-AE.

Annimax there is no jealousy here. I agree that somethings will always come along that is better. But did that better thing have to come a year after the anniversary edition which was supposed to comemerate the 15 years our maxima has been in production. The AE should be the legacy of our Maximas that should be endured as long as the maxima is in production. Even after the Maxima ends production, the AE should be the car that represented the legend of our Maximas. This is the question I want to ask Nissan. Why couldn't the 2002 maxima have been the 2k1 AE maxima since it represents the last time our maxima will be a mid-size car with that much power and with that much beauty?

i told her i'd like the get the new Z when it comes out, but now.. i'm thinking of getting ANOTHER max, the newer engine w/ a 6 speed manual (she actually prefers me to get another max, than buy a 2 seater).
which comes to a question....
would u get the newer max w/ manual 6sp. or get the new Z? (and please don't say things like, 'i'd get such and such car instead'... 8) i know u guys too well

Sure, something will come along that's better, but some of us are going to take a double whammy here.
The 2002 Altima is more than a match for the current Max. The 2002 Max, is not only going to be about the *same* price, but will come *greatly* enhanced over what is currently being offered. That's *two* something better's.
I could understand one, but two? I guess if you're going to screw 'em, screw 'em big time all at once.

Things change very quickly. A car is designed to compete with cars by other manufacturers at the time it is produced. Obviously the 2k/2k1 Max/I30 represents a good product and a good value compared to other cars out there or they wouldn't have sold many, especially considering the fact there's no H or T on the grill to sell them. Nissan is notorious for introducing new engines halfway through the model's cycle, so it should come as no surprise. What if you bought an 88 Sentra with the old E16i engine and then they came out with the GA16i in the 89 model? A manufacturer has no obligation to not improve its product just because it doesn't want to hurt the feelings of the people who just bought the old model. As for any type of special edition, it is usually an omen that something new is around the corner. It's used to pick up sales of an outgoing model to help empty the parts bins and get the cars off the lots before the new model comes out. 1997 LS400 Coach Edition. 2001 Altima GXE Limited Edition. 1999 I30 Limited. 1999 Maxima SE Limited. 1997 Accord Special Edition. 1993 Accord 10th Anniversary Edition. Even the 2000 Accord Special Edition (before the 2001 trim change). The list goes on. I believe I read about the 3.5 going into 2002 models on freshalloy before the 2000 models even came out. So it's not like nobody knew. I can understand how people feel when this happens, but if it's a major concern, there are sources out there for future changes in models to research before you buy.
Just be glad cars aren't as bad as computers. You can buy a $2000 computer and six months later a better one can be had for $1000. Now that's painful!

I think you need to keep things in perspective here.
The second you drove your car off the lot, you lost $2-3K. If you don't think that Nissan's little games with the 2K2 Altima and Maxima isn't going to cost you a few more thou in resale, think again.
You may think you lost a thousand on that computer, but Nissan just cost you *more* that that. *Especially* if they really discount the 2K1's (or worse, offer hefty rebates) to get 'em off the lots.
See, it'd be one thing if Nissan charged a couple of thousand more for the new car, but they're not. As a matter of fact, the 2K2 SE with an MTX *DROPPED* $200 in price over the 2K1, with a higher content in the car.
Come on now!!
EVERYTHING in life changes!!! If you want the best new thing out every year, perhaps a job as a salesman where you drive dealer cars around all the time is the solution!!
Some of us knew about the 2002, but wanted the AE for: (in part its limited run) the styling, interior treatments, exterior treatments, etc.
I for one always want more power out of my car and truck, but am happy with the AE for what it is, not what the next release will be in comparison to it! That is a futile and meaningless exercise in its purest form.
Should all owners of previously released cars be miffed because things got better since they bought them? No.
I don't think Nissan is necessarily at fault here (although they are far from perfect)...it is our expectations of things that just won't be.

You're missing the point, folks . . .
To use the computer analogy, it isn't whether Intel built a faster Pentium than their current best performer. That's to be expected. It's the fact that they built a Celeron with better performance and features than their current top-of-the-line Pentium and made it cheaper at that.
Now substitute the word "Nissan" for "Intel", the word "Maxima" for "Pentium", and the words "Altima SE" for "Celeron" and perhaps you'll get it. If not, let me know and I'll be happy to insert the substitutions for you.

Hmmmmm...Screwed? Nope I don't think so and here's my thinking:
The 2001 Maxima is in itself a great car.
If Nissan creates a stronger brand image with its' new cars it will only make all existing Nissans more desireable not less. And it appears that if this whole gig plays out Nissan will be a player like they have never been before.
Now if I want to dump my car in 12-18 months theres gonna be some fallout. But that isn't the plan because what I have is pretty damn good. I think I'll keep it for a while.
Bottom line is I bought a lot more than a certain number of horses for a certain number of dollars. Just my 2 cents.
