I was down at our autoshop, and I was bored, so I took off that heat shield. Is it going to cause any problems? Especially since, I'll be installing my Supercharger this weekend.

It shouldn't cause any problems but you might notice your engine bay will get dirty a little more often than usual.

 

MedicSonic just told me that when I put the S/C on, it'll burn the paint off of the hood. I dont want to do that.

 

I did not know that it the SC would make your engine run that hot. If that's true I'd put it back on.

 

Not burn, but cause the clearcoat to fade along with the paint, right over the SC.

 

The SC does get hot but not any hotter then the engine. I don't see a problem with the SC and hood.

Have you ever seen that mirror mat installed under a hood? I saw a picture of it somewhere, but it was hard to gauge how good it would look. Would mirror mat reflect heat, too?

 

and why would you want to "reflect" heat on your engine?

 

It's an important safety device in case of an engine fire. When the engine catches fire, the clips holding it on will melt and the mat will smother the fire. If you take it off, at least keep a fire extinguisher in the car.

 

so will removing it cause any paint problems in a NA car??

I've seen that too. I think its made by Folia Tec. I doubt that the stick on mirror sheets will reflect the heat. It might look really cool too, especially with a hose techniques setup or what not.

 

I've had my hood liner off for about a month now with no ill effects. Of course the paint on my hood is all f**ked up anyway, so...

 

Um... Is that a trick question? I don't think I would want to reflect heat on my engine. Why do you ask that of me?

I mentioned the mirror mat, which I've seen in pictures only. I guess they use the stuff for show cars and such. I asked if anyone thought it reflects heat, which, if it does, may provide a protective thermal barrier for the finish on the hood. Will it reflect heat onto the engine? I don't know. What say you?

I agree with the point that the original barrier should be left in place, as it may smother a fire in the engine bay. I do not believe mirror mat offers such protection. Thanks.

 

yeah the question is...does insulation under the hood actually help the engine's performance?

I put foil backed heat shield insulation right under that hoodliner. It's a little harder to close my hood, BUT the surface of the hood stays much cooler now.

 

under that carpeting type of material there is a strong foil barrier.

I figured that it does the same exact thing Dynamat's Hoodliner does, so I gave it a try.

Engine start from the inside is much quieter too makes my car feel a liiitte newer

BTW, we have a rental car for now since my dad got our van repainted (insurance paid woo hoo!). Guess what kind of rental car we have??

a 2001 Maxima GXE! I got to drive it and immediately I fell in love. At that moment I felt like I'd stay with Nissan forever hehe.

I've had my hood liner off for about 2 months now. No problems. It should also be noted that I've got a black car and in Kansas City, the temp has been well into the upper 90s with 115 heat indices for the past month. I don't think my car could get any hotter.

I also tested the hood liner removal with a digital meat thermometer and the underhood temps went down over 15 degrees.
