Hey all. I just bought my first Maxima (1992 GXE) and am pleased with everything that I have seen so far--except the stereo.
When I agreed to purchase the car, the seller told me that he knew there was a problem with the stereo--but he thought it would just need a new stereo unit. I knew nothing of the Bose system and agreed with him.
Today was a wake up call. I went to Best Buy to purchase a new stereo unit, and when I told the salesman that my car had a Bose system he told me that I would have to replace the entire system.
My question is this--I found a Bose stereo (AM/FM/CD/Cassette) that has been taken out of a 1992 300ZX. Would this unit work in my '92 Maxima GXE? At this point, I would much rather purchase a replacement Bose stereo deck than spend $500-600 to replace everything involved.
Any information will be a huge help...and will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

you dont have to replace everything. I hate when audio installers tell you this. I used to work at a stereo shop. All you need are two adaptors and one for the antenna total cost $30 at the most. they plug into your existing harness and then you just connect the wires like you normally would.
but just check the back of the other bose and see if it matches up with your existing one if you dont want to buy a new hu.

I noticed there was something wrong with my Bose system when I first bought my Max used. It had an aftermarket head unit, but everything else was Bose. After pokeing around in there for awhile I noticed that it looked like the antenna wire had been cut and kind of rigged to fit the headunit(I'm guessing they didn't know about this adaptor for the antenna at the time). The bad thing is that it gets crap for reception. I just wanted to ask if there was any way to fix my wire back to the way it should be even though its been cut. Can car audio shops do this? Or is it somehting as simple as going to Radio Shack and crimping a new connector onto the cut wire. Any help would be appreciated.

The common problem with the Bose system is that the amps in the speakers deteriorate over time. They can be rebuilt for about $90 a speaker (varies). This is a cheaper way to go if they are not all out.

I had to do this modification to mine bc I was told that there was no adaptor for the radio. I dont hink that it will be just a crimp and plug kinda job. The wire actually has two wires inside it. The outer wire is pretty good size but in the very center ( covered by some kinda shield) there is a very small wire. This was a pain in the A** to solder together. So if I were you I wouldnt try to fix it. I would just go with what you have now. I admit that it dosent pic up as good but. Some is better than none right?

Hey, I want to replace the Head Unit from Factory Bose to Kenwood KDC-8000 in my '92 GXE. I have taken it out and the backs are way different... So where might I go about finding one of these adapters. I have looked at NIB2 on Soundgate.com, would that be sufficent for the two adapters and the antenna? Also the Bose Radio has a fuse called "3" My Kenwood HU has a fuse that says 10A does that make any difference? Also all the wires are cut in the back of the Kenwood would I just plug these into the wiring harness? I am really lost on this.

there's your problem right there, best buy sucks!! don't do car stereo business with them. they have no clue what they're talking about most of the time. go to a place that specializes in car audio and get it done right.

mateo92GXE: Ok, you should find the right harnesses at any competent stereo shop. These will call for a little crimping job between the harness and the Kenwood HU, but they are color coded, so this should be no problem, I believe. Metra makes a harness, but the NIB2 should suit your needs. Especially since this requires nothing more than a screwdriver to mate the connectors. Make sure U get the antenna adapter, too. As for the fuse question, that won't make a difference because you're replacing HU's.

matt92gxe: I agree - BestBuy DOES suck!!!

Ara77: Dude, I've seen a couple of posts by you already pretty much "roasting" Maximas. Why is that? If U don't like 'em so much, why even come here? What's the point besides having someone get on your case and start a big, ugly scene? But then again, we are all entitled to our own opinions, I guess....

laserjet: Sounds like your amps are going bad. I think there's a post about a month back or so where someone explained how you could fix that yourself, if you've got that kind of electrical experience.

Sorry for the long post everyone!!! NOT!
