what's up everyone well i looked around for some info, but couldn't find any. so this is the problem:

i got a 98 gxe, 60k miles on it, just got the 60k mile service done at the nissan dealer. but, i had a couple of other problems that for some reason 520 dollars(60k service) doesn't cover. namely, getting the tires balanced and replacing the a/c belt cause it makes a squealing noise. so all that got fixed, and now i got another problem.

the brakes emit two very loud high pitched noises. two different tones. it happens i am driving, stops when i press on the brakes, starts when i release the brakes, stops for a few seconds when i go over a bump. the brakes were just replaced by the dude i bought it from in june. i'm already guessing that they are rubbing when i drive, but i don't know if that's something i can fix myself or if i have drop another load of money to let someone else fix it. thanks in advance.

it's pretty embarrasing, a nice car like the maxima, having all these problems... the guy i bought it from took such bad care of it. it sucks that i bought a maxima with so many problems(good price), but at least he won't do any more damage to it. i could smack the guy for treatin the car like that. one time he went 23k miles without gettin an oil change. sorry for venting, i just want my maxi to be what it should be.

I have the same problem, brakes are in still perfect shape and the problems started right after they were changed and never stopped. Horrid noise too. Evidently this is somewhat commen on maximas when you use non OEM pads (That's what I've seen on various sites anyway) And yes, I used anti squeal on the back of the pads, but to no avail

Hopefully someday i'll have the time to take it apart and try to solve it somehow. Good luck.

Disk brake squeal is a common complaint, but yours is not the usual case. Most owners hear squeal when braking but you hear it when not braking.

The Maxima uses the floating caliper disk brake design (as do many other cars). Each caliper is free to slide a small distance, riding on a pair of caliper guide pins. When the brakes are serviced those guide pins are supposed to be cleaned and lubricated with high-temperature grease. Perhaps a hasty technician skipped that step when your brakes were replaced. You could check this and correct as needed.

For further information about greasing the guide pins please refer to the Chilton repair manual (page 9-7) or the Haynes repair manual (page 9-6).

Wow Dan, I think you hit it right on the head for me. I serviced my own brakes, and never lubed up the pins!!! I'll be sure to check that out ASAP. Thanks!
