I was getting tired of my "slipomatic" so I decided to upgrade my tranny. I had clutches added, the valve body recalibrated, a higher stall speed torque converter added and an oil cooler installed. The 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are much quicker. At 1/4 throttle the firmness of the shifts are slightly noticable. As you step on it the shifts become increasingly harder. At wot the shifts really pop. The 3-4 shift seem the same, however, I don't believe any modification was done to that shift. I agree with all those who have recommended a tranny upgrade especially, the valve body recalibration.

Hmm, did you ever take it in for Nissan to do the TSB service for 1-2 or 2-3 slippage (solenoid replacement?)

I'm doing that tomorrow. What do I do, just go in and show them the paper, and say "DO THIS"??

Did u get the tranny recalibrated from Don's? I'm deciding whether to get the tranny recalibrated. But not sure if it would affect the top end speed. Cuz I know since the car shifts quicker then wouldn't the car top out of gears to shift at the top. Like would I lose top end torque/power? I mean for every action there's a reaction, what would be the down side of having the tranny recalibrated? So how much did all that tranny upgrade cost? Thanks

There is ZERO performance loss due to the VB mod. All that it does is make the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts harder/shorter. It has ZERO effect on gear ratios or power from the engine hence NO change in top end.

yup... no power loss or gain.... only time between shifts will be affected....

After the work, I haven't been able to chirp the tires on any shift. Should I be able to?

I didn't do the TSB thing. I don't believe there was anything wrong with my transmission. I just didn't like the slowness of the shifts.

I took my car to Ron, at Transmission Masters in Santa Ana, CA. He did the internal work. A friend of his did my valve body and another guy reworked my torque converter. I wish I can tell you how much it cost but I can't at this time. Ron is my cousin's husband and he won't send me a bill for any of it.

As for the clutches. They were added only to second gear. According to Ron, second gear is the weak link in the tranny. My understanding is that there are steel plates and clutches which engage the gears. Second gear has only two clutches. He added two more clutches which gives more clamping force. Hopefully, this will make it a little stronger. Since my knowledge of transmissions is weak, you'll have to get details from Ron.
