Hey- anyone else notice that all the gas stations in Los Angeles are now only selling 91 octane gas? First 76, then Shell, now Chevron and Texaco too!

Yup...it's been awhile now. After the supply of 92 octane was gone, it was replaced with the 91.

That's why it's a slow car.

Don't forget Mobil

I'm buying my 91 octane in LA from Mobil where it's cheaper than most others that are still selling 92. Because our cars only need 91 I think we can save some money.

What do you mean the supply was gone? Is there a shortage of 92 octane in CA?

Re: Don't forget Mobil

Actually I hadn't forgotten about them, but I'd let AAA bring me a rescue gallon of gas before I'd buy anything from Exxon/Mobil!

I'm curious as to what the story is on the 92, though. Are they no longer manufacturing it permanently? Just seems odd.

Are you referring to the Alaska Exxon Valdez tanker oil spill? If so, I respect your position. I had, frankly, forgotten. Some quick research shows it was 12 years ago with it costing Exxon one billion dollars in fines, plus cleanup costs, and the captain being fired after being convicted of a criminal charge. I wonder if it's now time to move on.

Actually... that bothers me, but was some time ago. And while it probably is significant, it's their more recent actions that disturb me to the point I cannot shop there.

Their CEO seems to believe that global warming isn't really happening and is actively opposing international efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. There are active boycotts both in the U.S. and in Europe. Exxon is also being criticized for ending domestic partnership benefits for new employees at Mobil when it took them over. And they're also being sued for human rights violations in I believe Indonesia. It all just adds up... All around, it seems they're just a bad company seemingly with very little concern for others or the world around them. Personally, I just can't in all in good conscience support them.

There was an article in the WSJ last month that outlined this and more that just really solidified it for me.

Well, I'm afraid we disagree here, as I'm a bit old fashioned. With all due respect I don't really believe there is a global warming problem mainly because there is no consensus among the world's leading scientists. Nor do I believe there should be domestic partnership benefits anywhere. I believe in preserving the institution of marriage to save our society from further deterioration. That concept, of course, excludes legitimizing gay marriages and heterosexual "shack up" arrangements.

I will agree with you, however, that if there is as human rights problem regarding products that we use, we should refrain from buying such goods. But if we go that route, we would have to boycott all products made in China that now include a great deal of our imported clothes, shoes, small electronics and toys. And what about the country that makes our Maximas? Japan's insistence on killing endangered whales could be a reason for boycotting their products. I'm not sure where it all ends.

In regards to global warming, while there isn't a consensus, I'd rather not wait until it's too late to find out there definitely was. "A pound of prevention", as they say... Additionally, I think less pollution is always a safer/better route anyway if it isn't going overboard.

But as far as U.S. companies are concerned, I expect better of them. For a company to marginalize a group of people based on who they are seems wrong. But at any rate, I'll shut up and leave it at that and just say that we agree to disagree since this is O/T from the whole octane biz anyway (not to mention it could get ugly!) We can just save it for soc.political.somethingorother!

In the meantime... back to getting those tight looking 2002 HID lights into our cars. I think that's something we can all agree on :-D
