Adventures in Nissan Service

I took my car in to the service dept at the dealer near work (Gaithersburg Nissan) so they could look at the check engine light I was getting. The service manager starts it up and asks me if this is the light I am talking about, pointing to the Service Engine Soon light. I say yes, to which he replies that this light means that your car is due for scheduled maintenance. WTF??!! So I explain to him how there is no such maintenance light on the maxima and that this light means that there is a problem. Well, he believes me and then writes up the service order. Hopefully, they won't give me trouble over mods and take care of whatever it is. But, from the initial experience, it does not seem very encouraging.... one highlight was, that their shuttle was late, one of the guys dropped me off to work in a new 2k2 Maxima SE

the service dept just called. They said I have a bad O2 sensor. They don't have the part in stock, but they will get it in by tomorrow. I wonder if the tech even looked under the car to examine the exhaust. I guess I'll go pick up my car and bring it back in tomorrow... I wonder what they will do when they go replace the sensor and see the y-pipe.... oh well, at least I can swap in new O2 sensors if it they won't do it....

BTW, they said the front O2 sensor was reading slow. So maybe they won't even need to touch the ones in the y-pipe

technically, it is illegal to swap out a working cat also.... putting the RT cat in place of a working cat when you have less than 50k miles is not legal either .... so they can get me on two counts

Nissan service is like a box of chocolates. Only about 1/3 of them are any good.

Good to know that you've left your Max with some competent people.

Good luck with everything.

You can replace the cat as long as it was damaged also. if they call the man say you hit something and punched a hole in it. same with the y-pipe!

Wouldn't it be funny if they replaced your y-pipe with stock because they thought there was something "wrong" with it.

Um...actually, it wouldn't be.

Give them a nice "Good Afternoon" call. Maybe that'll put your worries at ease.

well, I picked up my car. They fixed the O2 sensor, no questions asked. It was the front sensor, so they got no where near the y-pipe. hehehehe....

Anyhow, I usually keep close to $26 in change in my coin tray. I picked up my car and I had less than half of what I had before in there. Now, I don't want to raise hell over something small and stupid like this, but that is pretty unbelievable. I knew Nissan service wasn't that great, but theft is another thing. I think I will give them a ring tomorrow....

yeah, I really don't want to get anyone in trouble or anything over something so childish and stupid. But it just bugs me that someone would actually do something like that....

The first time I brought my car to Kelly Nissan, I had a pretty decent mix tape in the deck. When I got my car back from maintenance, the tape was gone. I confronted the manager who investigated the matter and reimbursed me the cost of the tape.
But when I came back for service a few weeks later, that person was no longer there.

hehehe... ya.... I bet those lazy guys didn't even put the car on the lift.... Anyhow, I found a blown fuse on the floor of my car. If a fuse was blown, then that could also cause a check engine light. Perhaps they replaced the O2 sensor just to make a buck off of Nissan... with Nissan service, I don't trust anything...

I know they replaced the sensor... the wire is nice and clean and the sensor is shiny. But, I am wondering what the blown fuse was for it was a small one...

Try Tischer in Laurel .....

They've been fantastic for me. While I sometimes have to point them
to the proper TSBs, they generally do everything I want without any hassles.
