High Idle when its cold out?

I thought I had fixed this problem last year when I replaced my throttle body, but as soon as it got cold (below 60) it came back. This is when the car is at warm operating temp, the idle goes to ~1500. When it was warm during the summer the car would idle right around 800 rpm. What causes this? Its directly related to the tempature outside. This is on a 95. Any help would be appreciated, I don't want to have to deal with this all winter again.

ummmm.......that's normal. I idle @ 1500 on cold starts 60-below. It only starts to settle below 1,000 after about a minute of warming up.

Yep, this is normal operation and "Fast Idle Cam" controls it. See Fast Idle Cam (FIC) Inspection and Adjustment in EC section of FSM.

Wait when the car is warmed up and idles at 1500rpm, that's not normal.

Do you have to force your foot on the brakes?

Maybe I was not clear. I know the car is supposed to idle up when the engine is cold. I am talking about my fully heat soaked engine is idling high when the temp. is below 60 degrees outside. How does it know what the temp is outside?

right that's not normal, I just don't know what is causing it to idle up.

yes, if I am slowing down and the rmp's are going to go under 1500 I pull it out of gear, because it is a pain when the engine is trying to run faster than what you are wanting to go.

yeah it's clean. When I did the 00VI swap, I made sure it was clean before I put it on the adaptor plate. This confuses me because it seems to be directly related to the outside temp., and I don't know what reads that or would be affected by it.

How about the thermometer/temp sensor of radiator? If it signals ECU "water is cold", then ECU keeps high RPM.

Just my guess.

ECTS is easy to change, so you can do that.

are you guys talking about the coolant temp. sensor? Why would that go wacky when the out side air temp. gets cooler? I had the problem last fall/winter and it went away in the summer and now its coming back this fall.

I'm guessing the water temp. is the same in the summer as it is in the winter...so I really am not sure how the air temp would affect that.

A faulty TPS sensor gave me the same symptoms.

I have the same problem and it came up RIGHT after I did the 00VI Swap. only diff is that it does this at any temperature...and it does it RANDOMLY. Sometimes it idles correctly, and at other times it idles at 1500RPM

any help would be appreciated =)

A high idle in general or a high idle when the weather changed? I have tried two different TPS and I get the same results.

trying differnt TPS(s) might not make a difference unless you properly adjust it using the proper ohm/voltage-checking procedure.

I set it with my multi meter, so I think I am good there. Why would the tps care what the temp is outside?

KOOL! Then i have a question for you cardana24, did see any imporvement in idling or shifting after the TPS change/adjustment. IT seems like mine's outta whack.

No it still ran the same, I just replaced it without checking the old one...the old one was not bad. You should check yours with a meter before you start throwing money at it like I did. Also I have a five speed, so I did not notice any difference in shifting.

Check the IAT(Intake Air Temp Sensor), if it malfunctions theres a whole slew of things that can go wrong. I dont know what the reccomended voltage of it is but it will trigger a CEL if it fully goes.

Lol, i should have asked if you have a 5sp. I checked mine, but i think my tester's screwy, it showed 1kohm closed, and 4Kohm when WOT (which is fine). I'll try to check the closed position resistance when i get a new tester.

I have an IAT sensor that's not throwing a code, though it is not hooked up to my intake, its just hooked to my clutch line on the strut tower.
