slicks, what size?

Hey guys , is there some kind of formula for calculating slick size? Thinking about getting slicks for my 03, and hoping that if the size is right I won't need to shift into 4th gear just before the finish line

thanks nmex, that helps some, most of the posts in those threads are 4th gens though. I'm looking for a calculator that will consider gear ratio and tire diameter.

Yes, I realize that, but the 4th and 5.5 gen are very similar. In fact, pone of those links includes a turbo 4th gen, so, yes, it's relative. Just thought I'd post semi relevant links. (i.e. 4th/5th gen similarities)

that's cool, the info was still helpful. I'm just trying to figure out if I should try to keep stock tire size or go a little smaller or a little bigger. I thought a slightly larger diameter would prevent one less shift. I thought a smaller tire would require me to shift sooner so I may even need to shift into 5th if I went too small. Now I am a little confused as one guy said the opposite.

Smaller is good for AT's, and may hurt traps, but help 60' foots.

that's what I thought. I'll be seeing dandymax next week hopefully so I'll have a talk with him and get some more pointers.

old thread, but I have another question, will 15 inch rims fit on my 03 max? Just wondering about caliper clearance. I think I can get some good deals on used slicks for a 15" wheel

It will be close and ultimately depend on the design of the wheel (offset, etc). This is assuming you still have stock brakes.

yes stock brakes. I thought I'd need a 16" slick but apparently they are almost non existent. A guy at work with a 600rwhp mustang recommended that I get the nitto555r drag radials. At least that way I can go 16 or 17". He says he has no problem hooking with the nitto's.

Next time I see dandymax we are going to try to fit the 15" kosei's that he uses.

IMO, forget DR's... different ballgame for him on RWD with much wider tires. They're still radials and can't hold a candle to a slick on a FWD. If you want to hook get slicks, and preferably M&H. My 2 cents...

BTW I still have some 15" Millenia rims with BFG DR's mounted, could try those out on your car also for fit but I bet the backspacing is worse than on the Kosei's

I agree. DRs are a whole different ballgame on a RWD car, the difference between DRs and slicks is much more pronounced on FWD cars.

Hoosier makes a 16" QTP that would work for you if you can't fit 15s - part # 17430

edit: and I'm not sure how I missed this thread before but given your power level and gearing, I doubt you'd be able to avoid a shift to 4th in a 6 speed. what speed does redline in 3rd gear give you currently (and on what size tires). do you have any 1/4 mile runs at your current power level that we could analyze? might require a 27 or 28" slick to avoid a shift.

He ran in the fall last year and we've done a CarTest for him.. although I can't remember off the top of my head what the results were.. would have to go look it up.

I honestly don't remember what top speed in 3rd gear is but it is around 140kph

1/4 mile time was 14.3x at 101.xx mph with a 2.2 trap, using toyo proxies stock size on stock rims. so 26" (lot's of wheel spin and had a bad bearing)

I checked the CarTest sim again, you'd need at least a 28" to avoid the 3-4 shift. But I forgot to see what it did to your ET and trap etc (lol sorry I was out of it last night).

depending on how far into 4th you are, you might be able to avoid the shift with a rev limiter increase and larger tires. of course 27s or 28s will require 15" wheels which you're already unsure will work. then there are also those other gearing options for the 6 speed. seems like a lot of work to avoid the shift though lol

no problem Dan, it isn't a huge concern, although there is a set of 15X6 rims of for grabs that I know of, but I know nothing about slicks, and am unsure if a 15 x 8 slick will go on a 6" wide rim. I think I have a line on used slicks 15 x 8 x 28's as well.

I wouldn't put an 8" slick on a 6" rim, even though it can probably be made to go on physically. (I replied to your PM on TMEC about this)

Might want to measure your wheel well too, is a 28" coming close to rubbing at all?

You can get 15x8" Rota Slipstreams if you search hard enough. That's what I've got to put my next pair of slicks on. 15x7.5" are plentiful and available everywhere. Don't mess around with anything smaller than that. You'd be unnecessarily handicapping yourself
