Car makes a pop sometimes during acceleration..
So today while driving i noticed that sometimes when im accelerating at a normal pace right at about 5-10 mph or so i hear a slight pop sound, it can also be faintly felt through the gas pedal. I dont hear it always but half the time or so... and when im turning i didnt notive it but mianly when accelerating straight. Ive had my sway link go bad and it was different than this so i can rule that out but what would casue this noise? Something with the axle or tie rods or bushing, I have no clue. Thanks in advance.
I agree Alex, and do believe it is the mounts. But, I've had this "noise" happen on more than one fwd vehicle I've owned and it turned out to be the CV joint, even in straight acceleration. Simply throwing it out there as a secondary option should the mounts turn out to be fine.
Alright well i do know i need mounts, probably all of them, but up until yesterday they never popped, so how bad are they now? And why doesnt this pop happen right when i hit the gas, how come its a couple seconds after? I did the ol' put it in drive and pull the e brake and give it some gas to check he mounts and the motor moves a good amount, also the trans pops when i got from park to drive or R to D so that mounts bad too... so i guess i should get mounts. How long can i go like this until i have time and money to do the mounts?
It actually really sounds like a bad wheel bearing. I had my passenger front go out, and it would pop like that from a start ever once in awhile. I replaced the wheel bearing and it went away. Recently my driver side wheel bearing went out, and was making the same slight pop from a start, as well as the thunks ever so often while driving. You can also feel these thunks/pops through the gas pedal. The reason for the pop, is play between the hub and the bearing. It allows the wheel to pivot somewhat. I lagged on replacing this recent wheel bearing, and it completely grenaded a few days ago, and took everything with it. The hub is TOAST, it took the brakes on that side, and the axle is all chewed up. My wheel acually almost fell of. This was also do to my fault though. I decided when I first heard the bearing go completely, I parked it untill I got the new parts gathered. I then decided to drive the car about 20 more miles at 25MPH to my shop to fix it. I don't have money for a tow truck right now. Well, didn't quite make it all the way there. Made it right in front of my dad's house before the wheel popped and wobbled away from the axle. The hub/axle assembly is finished. So I am off today to fix it all. See you all on the Forums later.
Moral of my short story: Fix a small problem like this, before it gets worse. It ended up costing me about $220 instead of $50 because I was being cheap and lagging on it. This may not apply to you, but I would check that wheel bearing. Also, most likely the hub is damaged from the bearing. If you replace that bearing, make sure to get a used Hub off a parts car as well. My first wheel bearing I replaced, I didn't get a hub ahead of time, and I had the whole thing torn apart. When I saw that the hub was grooved from the bad bearing, I wasn't going to use my good bearing on it. The car had to sit for about 2 weeks till I could find a used hub that wasn't $120.

My problem may be similar to urs, a couple of weeks ago i noticed sometimes while driving id feel some thumps thru the gas pedal, i didnt pay much attention to it and then lately the pop noise during acceleration, so maybe my bearing is bad? I have a 92 red gxe as a parts car so il grab the parts of it. But first, how can i check for a bad wheel bearing? Also how do I then remove the hub and can i use the bearing and hub from my other car (im assuming yes since the car doesnt make noise when u drive it? Thanks.
turn the tire, and if it sounds like the bearings are bad(a gritty sound, as my dad calls it, versus a rubbing sound), replace the bearings. if your strapped for cash, you may be able to get away with using your parts car's, but i HIGHLY recommend new ones.
I had a popping during acceleration, more of an occasional thunk, usually while accelerating on inclines. It went away completely after I replaced two dead injectors, leading me to think it was some kind of random cylinder detonation.
Alright I put the car in neutral, pulled ebrake and jacked up each front wheel. I spun them each and heard no noise and both felt the same. Moved smooth and all that which leads me to beleive they are good, but still what do i know. The wheels had some resistance to them tho, once i stopped turning them they also stopped spinning, is this resistance normal?
hardy har har. But my point was john it was in neutral shouldnt there be none to little resistance? Also if i rotated it one way then the opposite way really fast it felt like the wheel hit something or so, probably normal tho.
lol, I'm sure he definately WILL be checking his ball joints soon.
AND his control arms, and tierods, struts, and knuckle and BLA you get the drift
no need for the sarcasm. i was just offering my opinion from my experience. i used be on here all the time until i got my s6. i got a lot of help and info from this place so i figured i'd post my experience with that same problem. he never said he checked his ball joints and no one else said to check them so i did.

Still could be motor mount. Step on the gas, load the mount, slips out of position, drops back down when the car is rolling and not loading the mount. Maybe not but sounds like a good idea.
Just out of curiousity, are the CV boots intact, no splits or tears?
I did have a car with a bad CV that popped going straight. It actually locked up and the whole car started shaking and jerked the wheel back and forth. Happened on the freeway at about 60 and almost ended up in the guard rail. It did let loose again and we made it back to a shop. I always check my CV boots now.

oh another thing i just remembered. When acceleratingslwoly to moderately after i heard the pop at around 5mph the car would seem to accelerate slightly faster, but maybe this was the way it always was, i dont know just seemed liek after the pop i got a bit mroe power.
