New nissan hood struts still wont hold up the hood!!!

Ok after being tired of holding up the hood with random things I ordered the hood struts (cylinders) from midway parts, waited 2 weeks and after just installing them they dont hold the hood up. Lets me just say I am BEYOND fustrated. I called Midway and they said i can send them back and swap them out but I have a feeling the new ones wont hold either. Anyone else have this problem? I looked for strong arm hood lifts but no-one seemed to have them in stock for a 6th gen. Help please b4 I kill someone.

I don't have a 6th gen but i was checking out a 4th gen that I was going to buy and the same thing was going on. The guy said that everytime he put on new hood struts they would go bad in 3 months or so. So he ghetto rigged a 2x4 to fit between the hood and engine bay.

Broomhandles tend to be a favorite also.

I no longer have my Maxima, but I can certainly understand your frustration. I would be trying to get the strongest I could find. Maybe even call Nissan service department and ask for ones that are used in Titans or Armadas maybe?

I was under my hood yesterday and as coincidence would have it I noticed something about my hood struts. They are so powerful I barely need to push on the hood and they pull the thing right up with no troubles at all. Maybe you should consider getting OEM Nissan parts and if possible say you have a 2006 maxima. Anyways, can't speak for others but after 1 1/2 years of owning this '06 mine are working perfectly. (knock on wood).

I also have no issues with mine in my 2004. The only struts I wish would lift better are the trunk.

No problems here on my 04 SE trunk or hood. My old car had problems with the hood struts....vice grips work as a cheap alternative. Lift hood up to full potential and clamp vice grip onto strut.

For the record I did order Nissan OEM hood struts from midway nissan, they worked just as bad as the ones currently in there (not at all), and 04-06 are the same part #.... dunno what hood struts would work from other cars. When I called to complain the rep tried to blame it on the cold weather. I understand the cold can make them not work as well but these are brand new and couldnt hold the hood up. They didnt even seem to have any power whatso ever. I did the broomstick thing on my 4th gen, but I am not driving a hoopty any more. Hopefully the next set he sends will work better, but I am very doubtfull. I guess I am the only person with this issue. WTF!!!!

My '04 SL hood struts have worked perfectly for 3 1/2 years. I don't understand why some work and some don't. Everyone's 6th gen OEM hood should be the same weight. Are we sure there is no way to adjust them (like with storm door closers)?

The trunk lid struts don't lift the lid adequately, but that is fine with me. Should the trunk lid release latch be acccidentally tripped while flying down the freeway, or if I forgot to latch it during my usual dozens of trips while loading up for a journey, the trunk lid still stays down, and my undies don't get distributed across the windshields of the cars behind me.

OK, I'll grant you that should never happen. If the trunk lid struts were strong enough to lift the lid, they would have to be severely damped the last foot of travel at the upper limit, as once I get the lid going up, even with these weak struts, the lid tends to hit the upper limit so hard it bounces.

Light,

You've always had a way with words. What that 'way' is, I don't know.

DeusExMaxima and 4MySwee - Remember how very old I am (nearer 90 than 55), imagine the type of undies I wear, then visualize a selection of them caught up on the wiper blades, splayed out across the windshield of a soccer mom's minivan filled with teen age girls flying down the freeway. That would even bring a smile to my gnarly old face.

To stay on thread, has anyone here found stronger than OEM 6th gen trunk lid struts?

Mine were fine for the 2 years I had her. Maybe try a set from a junkyard?! How about some from a heavier car, like the Cadillac trunk lids? Maybe the X-5 Trunk lids?

Swee

Light,
You are a hoot! You have a knack for descriptive writing. Let's hope you packed clean ones.......

Now that I'd like to hear about. My trunk shocks are darn near worthless. While they do hold the trunk open once you get the heavy thing up, it's a real pain getting it open all the way. Especially when you have 2 or 3 grocery bags in each hand!

No some people just trying to be funny. So as it seems I am the only person that has this issue and although strong arm makes replacement for our vehicals nobody stocks them. I guess i must hope the next set of new oem ones i get sent actually works. Latelly I just really been getting fustrated with the lower quality in certain parts on my latest max, my 4th gen just seemed built better.
