How many people swap their rims for the Winter

Meaning if you have aftermarket rims do you put your stockers back on in the winter time ?

and for those people who have adjustable springs, i.e. GC's or coilovers .. do you raise your cars back to normal height in the winter for driving in the snow ?

Well......i kinda have to. I've SP8000's(summer only tires) on 300zx rims. In may basement is the nasty old beat up 93gxe rims with all season sp4000's(good tread left). I live in Buffalo....we get snow. I have to take off the summer ones and just put on the 15's with the 4000's. I could go out and get winter tires put on the z rims but there is so much tread left on the 4000's it would be a crime not to use em. I guess i'll just beat up on em this winter

I have eibachs and i'd say the car does just fine in deep snow plowing(hey whats an inch), but it gets hairy after a storm when the snow packs down and ruts in the street. Under some "snow bumps" the bottom teds to scrape...but its probably just ripping up the snow....not like scraping pavement.

the salt, sand, and snow will ruin the rims. I used to take them off in november.

I'm still debating...the 18's I have right now are under three months new, polished, so I don't want to mess them up. My only other rims are 15 inch GXE hubcaps I will raise my coilovers back up to stock when the time comes, though.

I would swap my 17's that I have on now, if Phil ever delivers my 15's to me. But to answer your question, yes, I do/will put the stockers back on.

I got rid of my heavy 17s because I got sick of having to swap them out for the winter and the track. I got a set of lightweight 16' K1s with Avid V4 215/55s. I love the setup because I don't have to pull them off and my car looks good all year round plus my car is much quicker with the lighter rims.

Remember, "summer" rated tires aren't made to handle extreme cold temps nor perform in snow. Cold weather will deteriorate the rubber and make the tires handle like crap. The tread pattern will ride on top of the snow instead of biting into it.

15" wheels with Yokohama Guard EX 600.....Cheaper than a deductable
if you slide off the road ...I swear by a good set of snow tires.

Eibach springs are just fine in the snow

wheels

I have a set of OE 15" ones that I run in winter, put the 97 wheels and Kumhos in garage for winter. Only problem is that winter came today, and Kumhos still on. I am heading out north of Devils Lake, North Dakota for a hunting trip. They got over 10" of snow there today, Damn, I hate winter. Good thing my Maxima is good in snow.

Steel wheels and Bridgestone Blizzaks go on the car right after Xmas. The SSR Competition and Enkei RSE and my stock wheels stay indoors

Well I been in two MAJOR snow seasons here in DC and Chicago. I have Enkei Chrome Rims, and never developed any peeling, flaking, discoloration or anything to my rims.

I know if the rims are "CORRECTLY" chrome plated, you cant have any issue.

My dad was a Mechanical Engineer, and he told "Chrome is one of the hardest surfaces........ It cannot be environmentally destroyed that easily.....That is why they chrome plate alot of hand tools." He is right, you leave a new sears 1/2"socket out for months, it wont rust or peel or flake or even discolor. All depends on the quality of the chrome plating and step process.

Hmmm

18" snow tires are so damn expensive expensive. I stick with stocks in the white stuff.

dang it man, So... the Kumho 712's aren't good in the snow. I didn't even think about that, they rock in the rain!

Shoot. well, I have the 16" 98 SE wheels, should I go back to my stockers too for the winter? 15" SE 92' wheels?

what tires should I get for the winter. The winter isn't that bad up here in washington, but it can get bad.

what about lowered cars too? I have the intrax springs, are they tough to use in the winter?

Thanks in advance

Snow Tires

The 17's come off and 15" steel wheels with Michelin Artic Alpins go on. They are butt ugly and they squirm, but I'll trade the looks and handling for potential body work anytime.
