99 SE Auto Speedo Cluster Fix A 98 Auto SE?

Hi All:

As I stated in my last posts, I am finally putting the Max on the market to upgrade to a Q45. It's been the best car I've owned so far, but as my family starts to grow, so too must the family auto. In preparing my car to be listed on Autotrader, etc. I noticed that my odometer lately has been starting to go. Everything else on the cluster works as it should. Approximately 135K miles on it right now.

I searched online and thought I had a replacement. White faced guages from a 98 SE with about 136K miles, but the bozo seller decides to tell me after I paid for it that it actually has 162K!!! What a retard. Finally got my money back, but cannot seem to locate another 98 SE cluster.

I did locate a 99 SE cluster that is supposed to have about 139K on it. Both that vehicle and mine are autos and the 99 cluster is bare bones meaning no LSD or traction control. My question is, will the 99 SE cluster work correctly in my car? Is there a significant difference between the two? If there is is a difference in the cluster assemblies, can I simply remove the speedo head unit and install it in mine with no problems?

I am willing to get a working cluster even if it means tacking on a few thousand extra miles. Please let me know asap, so I can make the seller an offer.

Thanks!!

Ted

I understand the itself cluster will fit. My question is whether there are any differences in the electronics in the cluster itself or rear wiring harness plug that are different between the two. For some used parts I use a site called Car-Part.com and one section asks for the year of your car and then it normally asks whether you want to search for "compatible years" to interface. For example, if you look up a 4th Gen door assembly, it will be listed from 1995-1999. However, when you plug in instrument cluster, it only lists clusters for 1998 or 1999, not those years together in the same category.

That is why I posted this thread in case someone out there knows something I don't. I'm sure someone down the road either tried this or knows someone who tried this and can let me know whether it will work. I would hate to purchase the cluster and sell the car, only to have the buyer show up at my door a month down the road all pissed off that the cluster doesn't work or it caused something else to malfunction. I do know that the 99 has a separate security system that the 98 does not, but am not sure if that affects swapping the cluster.

Let me know. Thanks everyone!!

In 1998 they switched to the digital odometer, so a 98 and 99 will fit perfectly. There are NO differences in the two.

Yes there is. I just got off the phone with a salvage yard and they advised me that the parts book they all follow lists only a 1998 cluster for my car, not 98 and 99. So, before you go around giving out misguided info, I think we would all appreciate members doing some more indepth research before posting.

Yes, both parts or identical in shape. Yes, the 98 and 99 Maxs are identical to the naked eye, but Nissan (as well as every other car company out there) loves to change things just enough so you are at their mercy to buy parts directly from them, not salvage yards or online sources. The fact that the 99 is the first Max to offer traction control, security coded keys and a limited option means there is usually something that the Nissan engineers tweaked in teh electronics just to f*ck with us.

The fact is, the guy I talked to at the salvage yard took the extra time to look it up and realize there is a difference. He doesn't want me buying the part and then contacting him a week later to tell him it doesn't work. It wastes his time and money as well as mine.

Hopefully this thread helps a member out there from making a potentially expensive mistake.

Regards,

Ted

So I guess i wouldn't know huh? First of all, I changed out my 98 Auto Cluster to a 99 Auto Cluster. So I guess I might would know what I am talking about. But if you insist on believing some junkyard know it all then go ahead. No sweat off my back.
FYI, if you would have searched, you could have avoided making yourself look stupid!!!!!!!

why would you ask a question and not listen to the answer?
