harmonic balancer/ pulley question
harmonic balancer/ pulley question
I have 168,000 miles on my max. I was driving and my pully came loose and took my belt off track. Now they are charging me 240 just for the part. Is there any way to slide it back on and put on the belt? If I did that would it stay? I really don't want to spend more money on my car right now. I have already change the alternator ac compressor rear calipers and water pump in the last 6 months. This is getting rediculous.
More info needed. Is the shop insinuating that the crank pulley is bad/damaged? Do they have proof? What did the shop say exactly?
Is the belt shredded/torn/cracked at all? If so, it must be replaced.
Still have the bolt that secures the crank pulley?

did the pulley come apart or did the entire pulley come off the car in one piece? i can't imagine the pulley just came off the car since it is secured by a huge bolt that is very difficult to loosen.
just buy a used pulley here on the .org and a belt for like $10 from the auto parts store and put it on yourself. save yourself like $200.

The lower pully or harmonic balancer has a rubber ring that isolates the actual pully from the balancer. Over time the rubber deterioriates (sp?) and the pully can seperate from the balancer. As our cars get older, it's a good idea to check this part from time to time. Put the car up on a lift and remove the right front inner splash shield. Look closely at the pully from the side, you will see the rubber ring that seperates it from the balancer. Look for excessive cracking, if it's very noticable, consider replacing the pully before it seperates and leaves you stranded somewhere.
I've had a cracked pulley for nearly 3 years now

It's still holding, but as a precaution, I bought a used UDP that I carry in my trunk just in case.

hmm i got a used harmonic balancer for about 150CDN and installed for 60. Unfortunately for me the pulley broke the belts right by a garage which i pulled into.
the rubber thing that seprates the pulley was the part that wore out and allowed the outer pulley to shift right over the inner breaking the 2 belts... one way to check is standing from the front the harmonic balancer pulley did not line up with the alternator pulley, a/c pulley and the idler... they should all line up...
u can get an aftermarket pulley on ebay for 150cdn... which i could've had if i could wait a few days.

Hey guys sorry I didn't add more info njmaxseltd hit it on the head. The rubber wore out and the pulley came off the balancer while I was luckily on a residentail street. I would suppose I need to replace the whole thing. My belt is still good because I replaced my ac compressor and belt last freaking month lol. What's the best price and product for the replacement.

I wish I had checked here before I ordered the replacement part. Honestly I would have preferred to deal with someone on here, because you guys know my Max more than 98% of mechanics out there. I have been changing tons of parts lately on my Max. I guess it's just normal for the amount of miles on it.
