Question about overdrive button on 1996 I30

My brother is trying to purchased a 1996 I30 auto. The check engine light is on and the owner told him that its on because the Overdrive button is not working. Upon clicking it on and off a flash of the O/D goes on and off so I think we established a problem. My question is would this have caused the check engine light to pop up? Also what affect would this have on the vehicle. My brother tried to get it to an autozone to pull the code (autozone pulls the faulty codes for fee on 1996 and up is what he was told) but there machine was mispalced in the shop so he will try to return on a later date other than that the car has 150xxx miles on it 2nd owner and in pretty decent condition

Thanks

Sam

A tranny problem will cause a CEL. I know because after I had my tranny modified we could never get rid of the light. The light eventually burned out and I don't have to see it anymore!

Oh, the tranny CEL had no effect on my car but your car may be another story, pull the codes ASAP.
