Gas Milage

I talked to somebody today that has a newer altima. He said he put a flowmaster exhaust and a k&n air filter and he went from about 27 to about 32 mpg. i was just curious to see if these mods would make that big of a difference, and also what everyone else has done to get better mpg.

I still don't run wide-open that much, but I've noticed that braking gradually instead of sudden stops has increased my fuel economy. Braking hard causes the brake booster to rob power.

Overall, though, I don't get as good mileage as I did a year ago, which is strange, and I haven't made any mods since then. I'm looking into it. Could be an aging suspension contributing.....we'll see.

I see another 'Not another gas mileage thread' post coming. In my Daytona I saw that same increase going from the stock exhaust (1 7/8 at the smallest point) to a full 3" mandrel system. I plan on a better exhaust system for our 99 Maxima. Just not installed yet. I keep our tire's air pressure up. Around 45 in the summer 38-40 in the winter. Driving style is a HUGE factor in mileage.

For the Max we will be keeping the mileage type mods simple. I run these guys plugs http://www.enginebrain.com/ I cryoed them as well. They have helped our mileage, though I suspect any new plug would of as well.

Obviously keeping up with maintenance is a biggie.

^^^def keep up with maintainance (sensors, spark plugs, and maybe eventually seafoam, which has helped I've heard) but i was gettin around 24mph when i put my short ram on. Before i put it on, i was getting like 26-28 with a k&n filter on stock intake set up. It was most likely the filter did it, and the flowmaster exhaust prolly helped by just enhancing the release of exhaust gases over stock set up.

I could see it helping on highway miles only. Stock intake and exhaust offer better low end torque, so cruising around town should be better stock. The car will open up on the highway though, so you might gain a mpg or 2...not 5.

the only time Ive experienced first hand for maxima's getting those numbers is on the highway. Just las weekend I averaged 32mpg all the way up to whistler blackomb ski resort (about 100 miles fromt my house), I have a k&n drop in filter and my exuast system is an oem replica but has slightly modifyed piping, (a bit thicker and smoother bends)

In the case of driving on the highway letting the engine breathe better helps it run more effitiantly.

You might be counting it wrong

I live in NYC, do all city driving (basically from one town in BK to the other) and I get 17-19MPG. 5spd '99, only motor mod is an intake. I plan to get a straight exhaust + Y-pipe down the line; hopefully that will free things up and help mileage. I have seen such mods help mileage on other cars.

I LOLed

My Gen3 gets around 25mpg. Need to get a tuneup on it, but I really think that would be the best I could get right now as it has 222k on the engine.

Not necessarily so. Keep it in the low RPMs (around 2k) and you should notice the difference.
I was once told to "accelerate as though there is an eggshell beneath the pedal." Works well for me. I recall getting 28mpg in the old 92 GXE I once had.

Engines are basically large air pumps. When you allow more air in and out not only do you create more power but you increase efficiency. Efficiency is the keyword there.

Your friend is blowing smoke up your butt. No way did he pick up a 5 mpg gain only by an intake and exhaust. Either he is driving very differently or isn't very good at math.

Header, cold air, exhaust and pulleys got me about 1.5 mpg more at freeway speeds (comparing several tanks average) over stock on my old Accord. Thats about all any car gets.

The way you drive makes a big difference. Depending on how I'm driving I get 16-24 miles a gallon. I only got 24 MPG one time though and that was in January. The way I did it was I briskly accelerated up to about 3k to 3.5k RPM. I would then coast, when I saw a red light I would take my foot off the gas and slow down then brake when I finally needed to.

I got 16 MPG because I was running on 5 cylinders for a week because a coil pack went bad. It's all better now though.

My car is automatic and it's stock.

Last tank on the car was 26mpg...heavily modded. It's going to go down for me this tank because of idling.

i think i read that flowmaster (some? all?)calls something they do
"delta flow technology" that "scavanges exhaust gasses from the cylinders

my exhaust is missing the resonator (shop made me a cat back)
and HAD leaks at the cat converter flanges till a few weeks ago(start car when cold outside +
look underneath with a flashlight and see if "steam"is shooting out in front
and behind the cat converter)....now it sounds way better and
might not need a resonator anymore

I drive an 06 altima SE-R, it has some bolt-ons but I drive it city/highway everyday and I average anywhere from 25 to 33mg. I pretty much baby it during the week driving to work, always keep the oil changed and all that good stuff. But the gas mileage isnt bad at all.

I have a stock 05 Maxima SE. Drove on the highway from Monterey, CA to Sacramento, CA, averaging between 65-80 MPH. I averaged 23-25 MPG doing 65 and 38 MPG doing 80! I was a bit surprised by those readings. I reset the fuel info and continued to get the same readings. Plus, the car rode fine and steady the whole trip. This is the 3rd Max I've owned and by far, the best.

The mileage computer has bad data....

Don't pay attention to the mileage computer. Mine constantly registers 4-6.5 mpg higher than actual numbers. It's a joke. Anytime I think I'm getting good mileage, I just have to check the trip mileage vs. the gallons pumped.....brings me right back to earth. My last tank registered 31.4 mpg, but actual was 26.9, which was good, but still off by a lot.
