B&M sts, redlinegoods boots, and 300zx shift **** installed

Hi guys, so the story is that last weekend my dad and I went on post and installed his sts, boots, and shift **** that he recieved for his birthday (I know, I'm awesome). Installation wasn't bad once we stopped arguing over whether or not to remove the cat. It was a tight fit in there, but with the help of the B&M instructions and another set from TWM I believe, we got things done. When we pulled out the shifter trim, it cracked in two places, so we are on the hunt for a new one. Overall, I really like the set up and I think dad likes it too, all pieces installed are quality pieces, and the shifter looks and feels great. It takes a little bit to get used to it, but it broke in in about a day or two filled with driving and now it isn't as stiff. Without further ado -- on to the pics! (sorry for the dirty interior)

And a pic showing the shortened throw, sorry, but my camera's battery died right before we went to go install everything, so no comparison pics.

3rd, neutral, and 4th

Thanks for looking!

Craig

I've had my B&M for years (stock ****) and I love it. Nice work. Check the classifieds or ebay for a replacement trim piece. I love your multiple-exposure photos--did you do that in Photoshop or on your camera?

Thanks, the multiple exposure shots were done using Photomatix Pro, which is also great for making HDR photos but it doesn't have much more than that. I think I need to invest in a copy of Photoshop soon.

Edit- oh, btw : are you still running those mille miglia's (sp?). Definitely my favorite rims on the 4th gen. Did VIPmax have the evo5's at one point, I remember his last set were the evs's right? PS(why is he banned?)

Yes, I'm enjoying the new B&M short shifter; Redline boots, and the new 300ZX shift ****. The shifts are very short....I like. Right now the shift is still pretty tight in that it does take a bit of effort getting into and out of gears but the throws are very short. I like that the shift itself is shorter in height and seems to be "sunk" in to the shift area instead of sticking way out like the OEM. I do like the new 300ZX shift **** too. We debated getting the AE **** but I wasn't thrilled with the metal insert with the shift pattern and I didn't like the shape of the **** either. I found the 300ZX **** on the Courtesy Nissan website for ~ $75. Worth it IMHO. Was kind of sweating whether or not it would fit though but found it has the same thread size as the B&M so no problems there. When we first screwed it down it was a bit "off kilter". You have to understand that the 300ZX shift **** is not symmetrical and has a front and rear, so to speak, so you have to get it on right. Anyway, my son came up with a solution: wrapped some tape around the base of the threads on the B&M and then screwed the **** on and got it tight. Works like a charm. I like the feel of the leather **** as opposed to some of the metal ***** I've seen on others cars. The shift does not vibrate or wobble, sweet. The leather boots from Redline are really nice. Again, thanks to my son for ordering them as a B'day gift. He ordered the four panel design black with light grey stitching to match the interior for the shift boot and a matching boot for the handbrake. They are both quality pieces and look GREAT! I'd recommend Redline to all. A couple of tips for installing them. Both boots have a wire that goes through them that you have to "thread" through the new boot. Ours had surface rust when we pulled them off and that made it difficult to thread back on the new boots. Here is a link to a post with pics that does a pretty good job of explaining the install. He recommends that you sand the wire and it does help as we found out on the second wire my son threaded. http://www.vqpower.com/v2/readarticle.php?article_id=72

Worthwhile mod to Max. Thanks to my son for thinking of me BTW. all the "junk" on the windshield in the first picture is pollen. It's approaching spring here in Savannah and things are blooming. Better than snow I guess. Cheers

Cool, I have Photomatix but have only used it to experiment with HDR. Yeah, I have 17x8 MM Evo5s, best looking rims on a 4th gen Maxima (18s look better but I didn't want extra weight/$$). Pretty sure VIP had them back in the day, but you're right, he was rolling on the EV-Ss more recently. Not sure why he's banned, although sometimes people change their avatar text to "Banned" on their own just to be funny...maybe it's some kind of inside joke in the Off Topic forum.

Thanks, as my dad pointed out, he found the shift **** and liked it so we crossed our fingers hoping it would fit and lucky for us it did.

That setup looks really nice. The Z32 shift **** is a nice upgrade over the stocker without looking ricey like 99% of aftermarket *****.

Driving shots?? :

or actually out on the road? 'cause I don't have any of those.

Btw there are some shots of the Max in this thread, although all of the front end (You can also see my Legend in the background ). He looks just the same, except right now he is covered in pollen. Spring break is the week of the 16th and I am going to give him a full detail so be looking in the members' rides section for pics.

I've always really liked the Z32 **** but never really contemplated putting it on my car. That looks great, the shifter assy really resembles that of a Z32. Tempting, even though I already have an AE ****.

I see you've also got Valeo Ultimate blades...

o so these are pretty universal then? So I can just buy it off of amazon and just install it in my max? That is cool... I am sure I might need something to somewhat match my car right?

Coremax, the one you posted will not work in the Max. The one for our Maximas fits in lots of early 90s Nissans. I think the actual part # for it is something like 45087, but don't quote me on that. Here is a link to one that will fit your Max: http://www.amazon.com/B-M-Shifter-19...341281&sr=8-12

Gah, rare, tell me about it. Its tough to find interior pieces for this puppy. I showed dad that he can put 350z seats in his Maxima and he likes the idea, but it would be a pain to find a somewhere that can do custom green/grey leather to match the interior. I know Katzkin has a bunch of different colors, does anyone know if any of theirs match the oem Nissan grey?

Christ, $160 for a short throw shifter? I bought mine from a board member here brand new for $30 shipped.

I believe it is OBX and can be found on ebay for under $50. It is just as short of a throw as the B&M (after driving both). I found the OBX to be less notchy, but it does sit a bit higher than the B&M (can be cut tho). Just my .02.

And back on topic, that **** looks great with the brand new boot and sts. I can only imagine how high it would sit on a stock shifter tho...

Actually, on a stock shifter it would sit considerably lower than the stock **** because the Z32 **** is countersunk so the threads start near the top of the ****.

I see, so a new boot is almost necessary for using a 300zx ****. Good to know.

I think the AE **** is nice. I got the boots stitched with light grey thread to match the ****, but we ended up with the Z32 ****, which admittedly, I like better. I could be wrong, but I think the blades are either Bosch or Rain-X , but still awesome!

Meh, I don't **** much about the OBX, but I do know that it doesn't come with the nice, sturdy billet shifter housing that the B&M comes with. When we pulled it out, our stock housing was cracked and looked wimpy. I don't mind paying $ for quality parts, I'm satisfied with the purchase.

Yeah, I had redlinegoods make the boot 1.5 inches shorter and it still sinks in with the new ****.

throw on a B&M is shorter than OBX. and IMO the b&m is worth the extra money.
They used to be 133 on amazon, guess not anymore.
edit: now i see them for $110 on ebay shipped. need to look around for the deals guys.

I've been researching STS's lately, and it seems that the B&M satisfied almost every customer. The feel and build quality is worth the money.

They used to be less and they used to be just a shifter. The new design includes basically the entire shifter assembly machined out of aluminum. I'd pay extra for that.
