IAT sensor and Stillen K&N Intake? Where do I put it?

(sorry about making a topic about this, but I need to know cause I am trying to improve my MPG and I am dead broke after getting laid off from my job so every mile helps....)

I have a IAT sensor sensor that is just lying outside of the Intake and I have no where to put it in my Stillen K&N intake. I bought the K&N cone a year ago off some dudes older max and I have a 98 and bought the stillen adapter ring before this but the car came with some ebay intake and the sensor was never plugged in when I bought the car a year and half ago.

Now I was told on here that the holes on this cone filter are from the 95-96 maxima and are not used for this 97-99 car. But does the IAT sensor on a 95 max go in there or something?

I am throwing a temperature sensor code and an ERG code and I think this is the temperature code relating too that... Can I just stick the sensor somewhere in the intake to get rid of the code and maybe improve MPG?

I will deal with the ERG later...When people upgrade there maxs with after market Stillen intakes and take out the snorkel it was once plugged into, where can you put the IAT sensor now?

Tie it someplace on the filter or make a new hole for it. It's not really going to make a diff. in your mpg, if it indeed is the IAT error code being thrown be happy that your CEL will finally turn off.

Get the EGR working, that should have a positive effect on mpg.

Stillen sells 2 different filters for the 4th gen. Your 98 requires the filter with the single hole in the center and its a press fit. The 95/96 has a different sensor which screws in, 3 holes altogether. You may have the wrong one.
97-99 filter :

Called stillen b/c i have similar problem. Previous owner stuck a dinky filter on the head end of the PCV, and then plugged the sensor into PCV connection on intake. It failed my smog for obvious reasons.

Stillen says they take a K&N filter and just drill a hole in the head of the cone filter for the temp sensor. Wondering if it is even worth purchasing a filter, and just try to drill hole myself. Any ideas?

I gotta clean my filter, haven't cleaned in a LOONG time, wondering if I can even get the gunk out at all and so dunno if it just best get a new filter with the hole drilled in.

ok, Update. I went to the junkyard and got a new IAT sensor... Also the Intake u mention Jstutter does have 3 holes on the front metal part of the filter, 2 smalls and one kinda big hole, but the IAT sensor hardness will not reach enough for me to put it near that hole if it goes in there. So yah it does seem like I have the wrong filter.

yeah, stick it in so it stays 'stuck'. I've also once tossed it in the filter, say just before the MAF. Had to seal up the area where the cord went in, but it was fine.

i did sumin similar.left it in the snorkel for 2moths until last week, the damn light came on.Turned out it was IAT, so i made a small hole a screwdriver and forced the sensor in.Took me 10 mins of pushing and turning in order to get it in.Havent seen the light since, dont know if it did make a difference or not.

where the hell is your filter? Mine is sitting where the battery usually is and it reaches there no problem...on my 95 that is.

^ but I think I should put it near the air so it can temp that, cause if it gets the engine heat temp, wouldnt the ECU mess up my curve or maps?

The ECU doesn't ever use the IAT for any curves. Mine used to dangle near the tranny.

Mine was exactly the same as well. I had to detach some of the wiring and re-route them, and even then it didn't reach all of the way but did bring the sensor closer. I noticed that it was zipped tied and so I cut the tie and now it practically *barely* makes it over. Its going to be slight stretch but seems like it will fit.

Apparently i am missing a gromette (rubber peice) that fits around the temp sensor. Until I have that I wont' be able to finish it off.

I have a single hole drilled into the cone of the filter for the sensor to be placed.
