Car leaks!

Hey, guys, it's me with a problem that's driving me crazy!!

My Max leaks!! Not through windows, not through sunroof, not through doors, but through FLOOR!

When it rains or going through a carwash, the floor carpet gets wet. Not only under driver seat but also the rear seat. The rear seat doesn't get as bad but you could feel wet when you touch it.

How wet does it get? When it rained for a day and I drove for about 30 min last week, I had to use three rolls of kitchen napkins to get it dried! Soaking-wet carpet and the smell are killing me!! It's so annoying!

I suspect that there should be a hole on the undercarriage or some seal is broken since the previous owner had an accident on the driver-side door and had it replaced. That accident might have something to do with this.

Is this something I could do myself like in a couple of hours or I have to take it to a shop and cost me a good amount of money?

Thanks guys. Any advise welcome....

your door might not be sealing properly. how does it close compared to the other doors?? how about wind noise?

I think the door seals ok. The wind noise is minimal.

Nothing else gets wet but the carpet. The sponge-like pieces underneath the carpet gets soaking wet first before the whole carpet is wet. I could actually hear it when I squeeze it down then the carpet wets.

Feels like it's coming from the bottom.

Thanks.

gravity works. i highly doubt it's comign from the bottom. the front glass replaced? check your seals on the firewall. how does your door shut? do you have to use much force compared to the other doors to close it? is the door flush the fender and back door?

I agree.

The thing is that mainly only the carpet at the driver seat gets wet, not too far away from the gas door opener. When I used napkin trying to dry it, I found that not all the carpet is wet but only a circle-shaped area at the middle of the carpet.

My first guess was a leak from the undercarriage. Once the water gets splashed in, it got sucked up in the sponge and carpet. Now since you mentioned it, I will look into other possibilities. I believed the windshield was replaced before, not by me. The door shuts just the same as the rest.

Thanks.

I just removed the kicking panel and flipped the carpet over. Man, the sponge was soaking wet. The water probably came from yesterday's car wash, and it was dripping all over the place when I pulled the whole thing out. In that case, water probably didn't come from the bottom, but leaked from somewhere else and soaked the whole sponge. As you said, gravity works. I dried the area out with paper towel. I am putting some towel in and see where gets wet first next time. Maybe I will take it for another car wash ride. That way we will have a answer for this mystery and might find a solution for it. Hopefully I don't have to take off the seat and it's something that doesn't cost me a fortune. Thanks, dude. Will update you when I figure something out.

Your sun roof drain tubes are leaking or have become disconnected from the sunroof. When that happens you'll get water down the pillers and into the cabin of the car, the floor is the first place it shows up.

If you pull the headliner down a bit you can see all 4 corners and the drain tubes. Check to make sure they are securely onto the nipples and nothing is broken, disconected or clogged.

That's possible. But when I only poured water on the driver side of windshield, driver side door and between, I got leaks.
See attached pic. I marked the two spots with red circles that water came in. And looks like the water flows along the power cable marked with blue arrow. I am looking into windshield leak and possible leak from the opening for the cable to come in.
Thanks......

My carpet gets soaking wet as well. I just marked where the water "flows" in with circles. Will let you know if I know something.

Well, I took the car to a windshield shop. Guess what? It's not leaking from the windshield part. I found out where the water is coming from by pouring different colored waters into different areas. It's the hole at the corner of windshield. I think that hole is meant to be there so the water can be drained out of that area. It's just there might be a hole or a seam on the body. When the water is flowing down, it also comes into the car. Darn, I will have to take the whole front panel off in order to go any further.

Anik, hope you have better luck than me.

There you go . Front view from the engine and side view from driver side door.

These was a front panel damage due to an accident from the previous owner. That might introduce an unexpected seam to the body, I assume. I temporarily put black silicone trying to reduce the amount of water that flows in. It's not perfect but helps a bit for now.

Thanks~

Can you be more specific on where to pull back the headliner? My daughter's 98 leaks and it seems to be around the windshield pillars, yet she only finds water in the floorboard mats. Sounds like it may be her problem. She doesn't take it thru carwashes so I know it's not from the sunroof directly. Also, the door seals seem to be secure and in good shape.

thanks
jeff

Well if you had body damage and its leaking you should go back to the body shop.

If it was a long time ago or a previous owner, clean it up really well, rough the surfaces and silicone it really well. Do both sides with emphasis on getting the silicone into the hole and NOT just on the surface. Squeeze it in there. That will solve your problem.

I have done that to a couple of different spots on my trunk. I hate trunk leaks.

I get a small leak because the seal for the windshield (at the bottom of the glass) is bad...
