Odometer overspeeding

Yesterday, after fueling I reset the odometer (trip meter) and noticed that after covering just ~1 mile it is showing as 17 miles!

How to correct this problem? Anyone faced this problem?

My Maxima never stop surprising me these days

Thanks
-MM

Yes, I am positive that it went all the way to 000 and I reset it again -- same problem.

i think the TRIP METER has 4 digits and the last one
represents 1\10th of a mile so you might be reading
1.7 (one point seven)miles as 17miles?

is your speedo working correctly? I am guessing its not just the trip meter, but both meters...
if it is, this may(dunno) fix the problem.go to the junk yard. pick up a gauge cluster from a 3rd gen(shouldnt matter what model, but to be on the safe side and if possible, pick one up of the same trim/year. and make sure the trip meter sets back to zero if possible). take it home, disassemble, and find the motor for the odometer(small little thing...) disasemble the odometer(or since the milage is probably way off now, pull the entire assembly.) now take apart your dash, and remove the gauge cluster. take your gauge cluster apart and replace that motor(or assembly). put back together, and reinstall gauge cluster, take a test drive. if it works, reassemble the dash, and have fun!

couple of notes:
1. if you swap over the odometer assy, you will have to note that the miles are off on the title if/when you sell it.
2. if you take the test drive with the dash apart, make sure to plug the hazard switch so you have blinkers.
3. while you have the cluster out, might wanna check for burned bulbs, and replace them if needed.
4. this can be a little time consuming, and frustrating(the first time...) but remember how you did it, and have fun!

wouldn't that have been a little obvious? the partial mile is on a white wheel, while the other digits are black wheels...(then again, some of the things ive seen.....and done...)

also watch your main odometer and see if it's doing it or just your trip. if in fact you are reading the trip as xxx.x

then your trip meter assy is broken.if the odometer works, you can just swap it out like I said before.

it's got little arms that reset to zero, and some gears and stuff in it. i've got pictures somewhere, just not on my photobucket.
