trading in an Altima for a new Max

When you trade in a vehicle, you are saving the tax for the new vehicle by the amount of the trade in right? So if you can trade in or sell it yourself for the same price you should trade it in? Has anyone sell any used vehicle through Carmax? Do they come close to the Kelley blue book value?

If you just sell your car to Carmax, who pays for the sales tax?

I am getting close to getting the price I want for the new Max, but the dealer won't pay me a fair price for the trade in.

Thanks,

I cant tell you whos going to pay the sells tax, but I had a 95 altima to trade in on my 01 SE/AE. The dealership gave me a great price on the max, but a horrible one on the trade-in. I ended up selling it to my roommate's girlfriend for 2500 more than what I was offered at the dealership. Unless your time is worth more than money, just put an ad in autotrader or the newspaper and make up some of the difference between what they offered and what you should get.

You only pay tax on the difference between a new car and your trade in. So if you decide to sell it yourself, you need to get more money for it than the dealer offered to offset the difference.

If you sell your car to Carmax, no one pays sales tax, as dealers do not have to. When they sell it, the buyer will pay tax.
