car shut off today when i threw it in neutral

i made a thread last year and the only response i got was 'change the fuel filter'. but what happens is:
im in gear coming to a light, light turns red, i throw it into neutral to coast to the light. the rpms drop way below 500, all the way down to ~300 or so, lights dim if at night, car wants to shut off for that moment but then the rpms go back to ~700 or so. everything back to normal. i never went too far into the cause cuz i never figured the car would shut off, but today it actually shut off while i was about to make a turn, so i lost everything and had to tug the steering wheel like crazy to complete the turn.

what are your thoughts?

my friends 240sx did the same, but it never died all the way....the reason was that he unplugged his speedometer and that messed up his revs when he would drop it in nutrual...
