Need advice on brake rotors....WARPED AGAIN....

Quick story:

Had a 4wheel brake job done Aug 00.

Fronts were EBC greens and NEW nissan rotors(OEM...NOT key value junk).

EBC's toasted by Sep 01(I know...perf pads), rotors had a slight pluse. I got new ebc's and had the 1 year old rotors turned. A nissan dealer did the work. Now....A little less than 2 months later...the rotors are wraped...worse than last time. I don't know what to do.

1. Drop money on having em turned again............only for them to warp in 2 weeks cuz they will be even thiner.

2. Go get new Nissan rotors.

3. Get some kind of aftermarket...sans slots or holes.....with your advice.

I drive NORMAL to EASY on the brakes....a few quick stops here and there....but no real abuse.

Bill94gxe....where are you???????

have you checked the runout on your hubs?

Have you tried to stay off the brake?

if the mating surface that the rotor rests upon (the hub) is not flat (spec is .003" I believe), than the load placed on the rotor once it's torqued down will be uneven, causing the rotor to warp. This is why it's important to torque the lugs to stock specs *and* torque them evenly. But, if the hub is not within spec, all this won't matter.

Re: Need advice on brake rotors....WARPED AGAIN....

1. like Phuong said, check hub run out. Although it is abnormal to see that problem.

2. just cause they're oem does not mean they're any better than after market.

3. I sense you say sans slots or holes merely because some people here on the board says so. I've had brembo cross drilled rotors that have lasted almost three years. If you buy a quality product, install it properly, and use it right, there is no reason why a slotted or drilled rotor won't last. I personally like a drilled rotor for the street cause it reduces brake dust, cause half the dust goes to the back side, there by lowering wheel maintenance.

4. EBC greens lasted 1 yr, not bad! Try porterfields next time, you'll like em better. Best pad I've ever used. I like em better than those "race" pads that came with my wilwood kit. The porterfields have no "heat up" time, which is much better for everyday driving. Mine lasted usually 25-30 K miles.

5. At this point I would say get the rotors turned again. Just use any brake shop instead of dealer to save money. tell em to turn em the minimum amount required so you won't lose so much thickness. Don't forget to top off your brake fluid after turning rotors.

6. Here's some situation that warps rotors. Driving through rain puddles after you have heated up the rotors. Washing your car immediately after long drives. Braking hard with your car under heavy load, as in many passengers.

Hope this helps

Time for "the expert" to weigh in.....

Correct. I think whoever OEMs Nissan's rotors should be kicked in the groin. They don't have a good reputation.

Brembo or Bendix rotors are the only brands I trust, as alluded to in the various stickies on the 3rd and 4th gen forums

3. I sense you say sans slots or holes merely because some people here on the board says so. I've had brembo cross drilled rotors that have lasted almost three years. Good points made here about the x-drilled rotors and installation.

However, I don't like the x-drilled due mainly to cost UNLESS you have them cryo-treated up front. Even then, you can't ever turn the rotors so with metallic pads such as Axxis and the like you won't be able to do much should you get any sort of runout on the rotors due to a "bad wearing" pad, etc. I will also attest to a better brake feel and slightly shorter stopping distances with x-drilled rotors, but the cost isn't worth it IMHO.

Agreed. EBCs (as Mike already knows) just wear too quick and dust too much. However, Mike, if you like the "new and improved" EBC greenstuff pads and they "appear" to have worn properly (i.e. not slanted, etc.) then use those with some nice shiny new Brembo rotors.

Otherwise, Porterfields or Axxis Metalmasters are your best bets.

5. At this point I would say get the rotors turned again. Just use any brake shop instead of dealer to save money. tell em to turn em the minimum amount required so you won't lose so much thickness. Don't forget to top off your brake fluid after turning rotors.

I disagree. I say replace 'em.

6. Here's some situation that warps rotors. Driving through rain puddles after you have heated up the rotors. Washing your car immediately after long drives. Braking hard with your car under heavy load, as in many passengers.

More good points. If you're like me and get tired of the warping, investigate ordering the new rotors from Porterfield and have them cryo-treated. I have had nice, smooth breaking since going with cryo-treated Brembos and Axxis pads for 14 months now, which is amazing based on my 2 prior experiences...........just ask Jeff.

Will someone please explain the cryo-treating process to me?

Thank you!

Do the rotors come cryo-treated?
Or did you get that done after?

Also, where do you recommend getting the rotors and pads?

No.

The easiest way to do this is through Porterfield when ordering new rotors (they sell Brembo blanks). You ask them to have it done to your rotors before they ship them to you at an extra cost.

You can also have whoever you order them from delivered to a place such as One Cryo (www.onecryo.com) for "out of house" treatment. But it's not very cost effective. 'tis better to let Porterfield do it all for you.....

Also, where do you recommend getting the rotors and pads?
