Ok. I own a 97 GXE with nothing more than a Got dam K&N Filter (when it comes to peformance mods).....hmmmm....OH Yeah! And Boch Platinum + 4 sparks Plugs (which don't do jack if you ask me) and I have on many occasion raced a number of cars, involuntarily (the animal took over) and voluntary (Someone simply asked for it) in my area. GS 400's, GS 300's, Mercedes Benz's (all sorts, nothing really sporty)Camaro's,a **** load of mustangs (couldn't say which ones, not a stang enthusiast), cadillacs, modded out honda's and a few of our 2000 brothers, the list goes on.....So far the only thing thats giving me any problems was the GS 300 (probably because I didn't really try to race em...probably) and ONE mustang that ripped me a new one on my way back from my girls house.....all the others have been completely smoked, nothing close, No ifs, No ands, No buts, just smoked. I doubt there are that many inexperienced drivers out here in Raliegh. I've seen the Clubs, some of these people are really put'n da peddle to da metal. Were talk'n side to side stop light Green light stuff here......whats my point? Why am i hearing stories of people being beat'n by a few of the cars I mentioned? I'll take Mods into consideration, but, Read the Posts, some of these races are Factory on factory and if not then there Mod on Mod. Whats going on?

you mentioned. So if you had problems beating GS300 that tells me the other cars were not racing you because you would have been smoked. You mentioned Mercedes If you are racing a E420,E430,500S,600S,clk430 you would loose you might even loose to a E320 since you said you are stock. You mentioned cadillac race a STS and see what happens you also said mustang I know I lost to a 4.6gt when I was stock and that is the slowest mustang they made and to add insult to injury it was driven by a girl. Then you mention honda now I can believe you on that one but try racing a v6 accord coupe or a SH prelude
and lets see what happens. Lets not even talk about a GS400 you would get smoked.
Now I am not trying to bust your ***** or ragg on you but think about what you are saying. There are lots of cars out there that can beat a maxima. Even cars like the volvos and saabs can beat a maxima.

I appreciate your honesty, Thats why I put up the post, But im telling you, My head has gotten pretty dam big these past 3 months or so (just moved out here). Well, I am bored so I guess I will bite.... I have an auto too, and when it was stock I raced anything I could find. I also took it to the 1/8 mile track and lined it up with lots of street legal cars. Lets start with Mustangs. If it is a stock four or six, it is a waste of time, because the Maxima(auto) will pull. The 5.0 are fun because if they have kept it stock then it is a close race, any mods, and you might be in trouble. The 4.6 is not as hard as the 5.0 and I have inched on them before and 100+ I started to pull. Cobras or anything higher, you will get a good look at their exhaust until you get really into mods. Camaro's are similar to mustangs, if they don't have an 8 and are stock then they get embarrassed by the Max. You can't take a z-28. I tried to at the track and he beat me by about 1 car in the 1/8 mile, and that is because he couldn't drive and I got a jump on him at the tree. GS-300 is not much of a problem, it is hard to find someone that drives this car and wants to race you though. GS-400, if they use their gas pedal then you are smoked. I was doing 90mph once and I saw those front beams coming up quick so I floored it but they kept coming. It past me when I was doing about 120mph like I was setting steal. I hit about 137mph and its taillights were still floating away. Lets see what else Cadilacs... OK STS your in trouble SLS you have a chance the others have decent top end but grandpaw and grandmaw don't like to race. Hondas, never had any major problems with any of them. The new 2 door accord coupe was smoked at the track, but he did have an (auto). Prelude SI is very fun, but if you keep your wits about you then you can take it. At least I have in top end, of the line it might inch. Acura's 6spd two door Legends will had you your ***, well it is not that bad, but they are mean. They have four doors then it is more evenly matched. Acura integras never had a problem with unless they were heavily modded. One guy smoked my *** to 120 but after that he didn't have anything left, must have been a gear or limiter or something. Anyway, I don't have time to go into everything, but this is my experiences, with my car, when stock.

 

You know I've been hearing a lot about these cadillac STS's. What do these look like (sporty?), and are they really that fast? As for the GS 300, there are alot of High price/profile cars like that out here in Raliegh and owned by Younger drivers at that. I guess he just wanted see if he had, like I said earlier though, I wasn't really trying to race him....it just sorta happened. All the same there are quite a few 45,000 + owners out here that simply do not hesitate to push there cars. As for the stangs, Im willing to bet that it was a COBRA that bit me that night coming home from my girls. No matter, Im game, I said I wouldn't, but I think it's time to start putting a few mods on the Max.....I can't help it, it simply has to be.....

 

that can smoke a stock auto Max,for example Volvo S70 T5 or 850 type R and don't forget S80 T6's.I raced a S80 T6 back when my car was stock it put up a hell of a fight but I ended up taking it by about a car length at 70MPH and remember I have a 95 5spd.Also watch out for Sabb Vigen's and Aero's they will out run you to.

 

STS I believe they have 300hp and I saw one race a Cobra one night and the STS was all over the Cobra's ***, just to prove a point (I think he could have passed him if he wanted)

then damn he had a lemon, cuz that was Motor Trends car of the year a few years back... it had a 5-speed auto and was 0-60 in like 6 seconds flat no auto max does that stock. sorry.

 

To begin I drive a 99 SE with some mods, but I raced plenty when I was stock as well. Mustangs are both under and overrated because each year has different strengths. The older 5.0's will give you a good run as will the 99+ V6's if driven right. My friend has a 2000 V6 and it is almost exactly the same as my max. His car comes in at 190hp with 216ft/lb torque. I should be able to beat him, but don't underestimate the new mustangs too much.
The STS is a Cadillac Seville which is marketed as the most powerful front drive car in the world. It has 300hp but it also weighs 2 tons. I haven't gotten to race one of these either, but I have a feeling that a standard would edge it out. The GS400 would smoke you in a second if they wanted to race.
Has anyone ever raced a GTP? I've gotten the chance to race 2 and I beat both of them. Statistically I don't think that I should have been able to though. The GTP is a supercharged Grand Prix with 240hp. I would assume the downfall of the car is the fact that its auto.

WoW! Im getting a lot of input on this one. Thanks to all for your responces (positive and negative). Although it was not my original intention, All in all I think it's at least safe to say that the Max/auto cannot be denied as a Force to be reckoned with in todays vast sea of automatics......

Volvo 850 GLT WITH THE SPORT MODE ECONO OPTION. HMMM . Well my mom told me to wash her car one day and uhh well being me I decide to see what my moms car has. So I pull up to a light and a 97max pulls up, My moms car is an auto but for some reason that doesnt stop it. It has Quick acceleration. So I look at him, knod, and point to the next light. He nods back. So Im looking at the other light to turn red count two seconds then Bam! I shift it to drive manually with the sport mode on to get even better acceleration. So I am racin 5000rpm in first and go to second. From the start I already had a good half car length on him. So then he starts to pull alittle Im already in drive so I push it back into 2nd. I know know, bad for the trannsmission. But after that he was gone rear view mirror style. But at the next light he pulls up and says great run what you got under there. Nada dam* thing. So he wants to do it again but I tell him no because I was really hecka nervous about when I down shifted back to second, I didnt want to pay no big a** transmission bill! But I would say it was a fun road kill. Oh by the way his car was stock too. I dont understand why he asked me what I had under the hood if he was stock though. but it was fun and Volvos can be contenders, just depends on how you drive the car. Its all about skills.

For you to beat it{I owned a 94 850 before and my mom has a 97 850}they do 0-60 in 8.8 VS a 97 Max which does 0-60 in about 7.8.Also you actually would have slowed your self down by attempting to Manually shift in Sport mode since when sport mode is ingaged it shifts perfectly at redline every time at WOT.There is one exeption to this story but you still should not have won if it was a 97 Volvo 850 GLT's which recieved a low compression turbo charger with 190 horespower,and 93-96 850's GLT or regular trim had 168HP.Either way a healthy Max would blow either of them away no problem.The only volvo's that could beat a auto max are 850R,S80 T6.or a S70 T5 which is the quickest volvo ever in 5spd trim it does 0-60 in 6.2 and 1/4 in 14.8 now that would smoke even a 95 or 2K 5SPD stock Max but not mine haha.

my definition of "smoke" is to kill by at least a couple car lengths...
i have a 95se 5 spd..intake few other insignifigant mods....maybe my car is slow or whatever but i have had problems with some of the cars you have beaten.....the mustangs....I have beaten 4.6's and have been pretty even with 5.0's (95-98) neither of which I would describe as smoked, the new v-6 actually is a good race....the f-body's are beaten if in v-6 form....the v-8's will take me by a few car lengths......never raced a caddy......no mercedes really try to race me....i have raced a gs300 when my girl was driving....pretty close, she was about to my back bumper to 60 or so....i have been beaten by several gs 400's....hondas....preludes have beaten me, my homeboys stock 00 integra gsr took me by about half a car.......on another interesting note, i was spanked by a volvo station wagon a while back too...to sum it up, what i am saying is the only time I "smoke" cars is when it is a 4 cylinder or a heavy auto v-6.....any other time, I may or may not win the race but neither car will smoke the other.....

My father has owned both the STS and the SLS. I've only had the opportunity to race his SLS (97). Out of the hole, being a stick I come out ahead. But by the time I hit third gear, here he comes and then it's over for the Max. The SLS has a lowly top end speed limiter of 115. This was with my wife's '96 with only a bolt on exhaust.
When my father bought his STS (98), my uncle bought his old SLS. My cousin and I had an opportunity to race these cars against each other (I told him the SLS "felt" quicker and he said no way!) and would you believe the SLS beat the STS right up until the limiter kicked in?
Bottom line...I don't think the Max can hang before the limiter kicks in.

The new Mustangs (V8, 5 speed) are very quick. 0-60 in something like 6.0 or less. I'm dying to run into the Grand Prix GTP.

It's all in fun, just chose your spots when you do race on the streets.

 

I gotta disagree on that whole STS thang for the simple fact that my boy has an STS and just last week, after all his bs'n about rippin me a new one, i smoked him with minimal effort. Well not minimal, but fact is they can't hang.

 

yesterday at Englishtown and he ran a 15.3 with a trap speed in the 90s. There were a couple of maximas there 5speed and auto and none ran faster than a 15.4. The 2k gxe ran a 14.8 though. And plain and simple the GS300 is the slowest car he mention out the bunch and he said it gave him some trouble. (makes me wonder)

 

I',m not sure if the whole northstar thing makes a difference or not, but his sts doesn't have the northstar system. I sit here and think about it though,the thing weighs 4k+. With only 300hp and about 293tq, how on earth can this boat be a smooth max?? By the way that whole smooth max thing was just a coincident.

This power comparison's got me ittching to add my 2 cents.

Check this:

I raced a GTP Coupe. I was stock 98 SE 5 speed with a K&N Panel filter. Smoked my *** from zero to 50. I expected that. Yeah the GTP weighs alot. But it's a supercharged V-6. Right off the bat, a GTP better beat me, cause even without the S/C, it's got a 3.8 advantage to my 3.0. In NA form it doesn't make more power, but can do some pretty good torque cause it's a naturally bigger engine. Then you add an S/C?? Torque gets V-8 like then. I hate the GTPs, cause they need a big V-6, with an S/C on top, to make moves. The Max is just NA, and its bangin' and I'm proud of it to make GTP work for it. When it comes to cornering, the GTP's a whale!

As for the comparision's to Cadillac STS,SLS, GS400 etc, this is the deal; The STS, LS400 and Q45 are the type of cars made for people who like to go fast, but don't really need to rush the quarter mile to get there. So, the STS will be beaten by a Max from 0 to 60, but after 100, lookout, those guys will catch you and leave. They're geared that way, their gear ratios are set so that they are most flexible after 100 mph. They don't mind, they're cool with that.

As for the GS400 type cars, like the Jaguars, Mercedes E420 series, those cars are built to TAKE OFF from zero, and keep going all the way up. I know, my mother has an E420 and I've put it thru its paces;-) From stand still, even a modded Maxima can't touch it, that sh** flies. 0 to 60 in 6.1 sec, and its the slower one in the group (GS400, Jaguar,540i). The GS 400 is at 5.9. Funny thing, the E420 has a limiter at 130 MPH, so the max will eventually catch it and pass it.
