Buying 3.5 SV, Need advice.

EDIT: Finally bought it - Winter Frost with Frost Leather, Sport + Sport Technology package. Loving it so far

Hello all,

Hopefully I am writing in the right forum section seeking for your advice.

I was looking to buy a 3.5 SV Sport + Sport Tech package, and finally my dealership has one with the color and options that I want.

The MSRP for this configured model is 37,235. I have approached the dealership via the Internet, I believe it was Edmunds. Straight off the bat, they have offered me a below than invoice price which is 33,748 (Invoice is 33,943).

I don't have much experience dealing with dealerships, but I always thought that they would start off with a higher price.

Now I know that because of the financial crisis dealerships are desperate for business, but first I wanted to hear your opinions on this: is this a good price? would it be possible to go any lower, 31k? what might be the other reasons for them to go this low?

Thanks in advance.

EVERYONE is desparate for business right now. Not sure how much lower they would go. However, if they don't you might want to see if they'll throw in other things like warranties, etc.

LOL of course not.

I work for a big financial group. I see who and who isn't getting credit. There's NO DOUBT that alot of business are hurting pretty badly.

FWIW - I talked to my dealer yesterday, only because their website showed one exactly how I would order it (I really would rather wait, but if one shows up - I could be tempted). It was sold this weekend. They told me I could get one about $200 below invoice if it was on their lot, or for invoice if they had to do a dealer trade.

To the OP - I'd be surprised if you could do much better than that at this early stage.

First thing to check is Dealer Doc fee. Here in CT I have seen dealers charge $300-400 for it. Thats the way they can make up the initial low price.
I personally think that prices will drop with time (steel prices drop, nissan incentives, etc..), so in your case if you can wait, then do so. If you want the car then buy it.
I am sure if you call the dealer and tell him something along the lines:
"you gave me a great price, but I was prepared to pay *put your number here*, he will say "let me check with the manager" and come back to you with an answer". If you want to save couple of hundred bucks, I am sure he will do it. 31K in my opinion is totally unreasonable for a brand new car with your options SV Sport+Tech, without some type of Nissan incentive.
That said, if you get them to go to 31K, let me know the dealer, and I will fly there to get my next Max
Good luck,
Max
p.s. advise based on my actual experience buying 05 Honda Ody over internet.

My dealer has a 'standard' Document Fee of $500. Between that and the dealer holdback, he makes his profit. Having said that, the deal TZapper has been offered is a very good one (better than I have been quoted by my dealer so far), and I would be surprised if he could do appreciably better unless he waited until Nissan came up with an incentive program.

Dealers here in Georgia are really hurting. A huge high-volume Chevy dealer (Bill Heard) near me closed all 14 of his dealerships nationwide last month, throwing 2,700 employees out of work with no warning and no benefits. Several smaller dealers around here have also folded. Georgia lost the second most jobs of any state last month. Many thousands of jobs are being lost almost every month here in Georgia. Most homes around where I live that were for sale two years ago are still sitting empty, and nobody is even looking. Things may be fine somewhere in the world. But not in Georgia.

I think Nissan will be very carefull with an incentive program, but still is a little too early for that.

Today is Sunday and I was at a local dealership to test drive the Maxima. I was one of two customers. The dealership had 15 Maximas in stock. It is only a matter of time before Nissan incentivizes sales.

Patience.

I got 3k off MSRP without much haggling at ALL and this was a month ago. The incentives are on the way in my opinion.
