5 speed transmission shot at 66,000 miles

I have a 2001 that will not go into first or 2nd gear. Nissan said I need a new trans for $3,500 and Aamco wants $2,700 for a re-manufactured one. I cant believe the trans can go bad at only 66,000 miles. I bought it new and never beat on it. Is there an issue with the trans on these cars? Thanks

don't get it from the stealership...it's a nissan, plenty of low mileage trannies at the junkyards, will be a lot cheaper.

Does it go into reverse without any clashing or grinding?

Aamco was cheaper but not by much. They said it is all trashed inside and would cost more for the individual pieces that to put in a remanufactured transmission.

It goes into 3-5th and reverse fine. It happened in the past after I pulled off the highway after a long drive but I was able to get in into gear eventually. Not this time though.

if it was the throw out bearing that was the problem you wouldn't be able to get into any gears.

Have you checked or changed the gear oil lately? maybe you have been running it dry and destroyed your syncros although you should still be able to get it into gear with some effort.

i say check your linkages or you may just need to adjust the pedal/bleed the system. Do you have a soft pedal in the mornings by chance? You may not be disengaging all the way making it hard on your tranny to slip into these gears

I've never seen manual broken down on maximas. I feel they were trying to steal you.

Well, I dont trust any place but they said they opened the transmission and it is all destroyed inside. The problem is, if I bring it anywhere else, they will charge me to look at it again and that is expensive.

if you must get a new transmission, get it from DAVEB, the parts guy here. I promise he will give you a lower price than your nissan dealer and he is a parts guy for a Nissan dealership too. his discounts rock!

Was there lots of metal in the fluid? Don't tell us that they removed the tranny, split the case, found trashed parts, put it back together, and reinstalled the tranny?? This makes no sense!

I had to replace my 6sp tranny a few weeks ago. Got a used one with 34K miles and 90 day warranty from a junk yard I found on car-part.com. $500 + $200 for shipping. Got it installed for $350 at a local shop. The clutch was OK but I replaced it too. Rebuilding the tranny would have cost a lot more than that.

I thought about a used tran but that just might lead to more problems down the road. Does anyone know where to get a good deal on a re-manufactured one? Maybe I can have Aamco put on one I buy and send to them.

Yes-it was $500 to pull the trans off the care and open it up. I can see that because that would take a while to do. I think I'm screwed.

That wasn't a good option...you should have just looked online for a new transmission. If it's apart, go look at it to verify that the transmission is indeed damaged. If it is, buy a new one online and have them install it.
