Pulsey steering when cold

OK, I have a 1995 GLE with 263K (kms)
It seems that when the car is cold, and i'm shifting into drive and ride the brake and even when accelerating a little, the power steering seems to cut in and out ie: become pulsey for only a min. Then after a min it goes away.

I know i need a new idler pully cause the bearings are shot and it squeels upon start up but also goes away after a min. Since this is part of the altinator, pulleys, blah blah...could it have to do with that?

I'm afraid that i might loose my power steering on the drive home (30kms) or have to replace something really expensive.

Where is the PS pump and belt located to? Is it joined onto the whole pulley system that the altinator is attacted to?

Thanks in advance

Sean

You mean it's hard to turn the wheel when you first start the car?

That's normal if it's super super cold out. That's why I let my car idle for at least a minute on really cold days (10 degrees for example).

i'm not talking super cold out...like -2 to -5 degrees celcius. It's like the PS cuts in and out rapidly

I still think you're experiencing the same thing I just mention. It's just cold...give it some time.

Is it hard to turn the wheel when you're backing out of, say, a driveway or parking spot? And then the problem goes away?

sort of yea...backing up and going foward, it's the same. But it on;y occurs for about 45 secs or so then when all the whining of the pully settles down it stops....

Replace the belt, it may be glazed which is why it's slipping when it's cold.

Here is the picture of where the pump is located. It’s most definitely the belt. Before replacing the belt check to see if it is in good condition. Maybe all you need to do is to tension it. Also make sure you have enough power steering fluid.
