5spd Ignition - Push Button Release
5spd Ignition - Push Button Release
I was just wondering, what is the purpose of having the push to release button on the ignition in order remove the key? Why is this only on manual transmission?
I have always wonder this too. If I had a stick shift, it would drive me nuts. All I can think of is it's the equivalent to the automatic's "Park". Meaning, you can only withdraw your key when the car is in Park. You can turn off your engine when you're in, say, D, but you can't withdraw the key. So, since you can turn off your engine in any gear with a manual (there is no "P"), it's the extra step that keeps the key in unless actually intended to be pulled out. ? Just a hypothesis.
I think that it is just a reminder to put the car in gear/pull the ebrake before pulling the key out. I don't even think about it anymore, I bump it as I pull the key without putting any thought into it. My friends 92 300zx has one too IIRC.
The first 4th gen I test drove I couldn't get the key out for the life of me until I realized the push button

i dont see how any of you guys find it annoying, i don't even relise i'm hitting it any more, i just brush it with the side of my finger as i'm turning the key and i have just forgotten its there
my dad has a new civic 5spd and on the key for that you have to push the key in further at the end of the turn to get it out, does anyone know if it's for the same reson on the civics?

Just to keep you from removing the key all the way by accident, I guess. Not sure why they make them like that, never really looked into it.
A lot of them are easy to do, my '87 Maxima, the stock 5 speed 4th gens, Z32 I believe has the same button. Some of them are just a PITA though, I never could get it out smoothly on 3000GT/Stealths.

I'm doing the swap and I actually want to have the push button. It seems so pointless yet cool to me at the same time.
Uummm, wow, what a troll. Go make some drift videos.
Not sure how that could happen. You'd need a full twisting motion, and the key being pulled directly towards the passenger side of the car. Probably never going to happen by accident.
Don't see how that is possible if the ignition is in the ON position. You can only pull the key out from the OFF position on every car.
On some days, I wanna show off my car or I'm too much in a hurry to wait, and the only way to get my car parked in front is to have it valet'd. It's bad enough the valet dood stalls my car w/ACT clutch, then chirps 1st cuz it's such a torque monster, and then it's even worse when they can't figure out how to take the key out, so they leave it in the car. WTF?!

good question! I never gave it any thought.

That's how I feel about it too.
I never valet, never. I don't care how far I have to walk in the freezing cold, nobody drives my girl.
