Scratched lenses

So I was talking to a buddy the other day and he told me to sand the lenses down to make them look like new again. I think he is full of S***. That will just add a million more scratches. So how do you get rid of the scratches on the headlight lense (everyday driving 8yrs of use). I figured there may be a solution other than buying new ones. Any suggestions???

Your buddy is not far from reality. There are kits sold with different grades of sand paper and a finish polish solution that are used to removed scratches from plastic lenses. I used one of those on my 4t gen and got excellent results. There are also some other products that claim to remove scratches without the need of sand paper (?), such as Scratch-X. Since I don't have any major scratches on my 2k, I have only used a creamy compound called Brasso to remove the yellowish glaze from my lenses.

he's not full of ****. haha it can be done, i've done it a couple of times. just start at around 800 or 1000 grit sand paper, soak in some soap and water and lightly sand the pits away. move on to 1500 then 2000 with little preasure until its mostly smooth. after all that use meg scratch-X and rub it in with a lot of pressure until clear. and hello new lens

Yup, it can be done. I've seen it done with this kit. Kinda pricey but it works.

Go to autozone get some Meguiars PlastX and start rubbing, you'll see results in a matter of minutes.

Done it on mine, start with 500 then move to 1000 and 2000 grit wet sanding. Polish at the end with either Mothers Plastic Polish or high speed buff with polishing circular buffing cloth. Worked like a charm on my fogs and headlights...

For pete's sake, use the least aggresive procedure/compound/polish first. If you use any kind of abrasive cloth or paper first......you are commited to a heluva lot of work. If you are just looking at the usual minor pitting and loss of shine, then just use a plastic polish or Brasso or Silvo as suggested above. About once a year a give my headlights and taillights a Brasso polish job and they come up like new.

I use 400 grit wet sand with soapy water, sanding very light, then 600 grit wet sand, then 1200 grit wet sanding very well. Use compound with wool pad, rubbing compound with foam pad the scratch removal with foam pad. Wash and wax. Comes out better then new. Involves a bit of elbow greese though. About one hour for both.

i used the blue magic sold at autozone for the yellowing part on my headlights and it worked great and made them clearer but after doing that i saw scratches and notice how unsmooth they are and wanted to try 3m lens wit sandpaper, im thinking this will make them so clean and clear like NEW since its actually sanding them down....

aight I will use a compound first and then sand them down if I see I need to. Its just minor stuff from normal 8yrs of being on the road. Nothing major (no rock chips or deep cuts). Thanks again for all the input, I will do this over the weekend.

Please take some before and after pics and post them up with the info on what you used so we can see.
