white smoke on start up
white smoke on start up
Today i started my car after it sat for about 2 day and I saw white smoke out the tail pipe. Could the rings on the car be going bad? the strange thing is, it only happens when the car sits for a day or two, but if i use the car every day it doesn't do it. what could it be? this sucks big time.... any help would be appreciated.
Sure it was white? Didn't have any bluish tint to it?
If it was just a quick puff of white smoke, it's normal.
If it's bluish, the valve seals could be leaking.
Next time it sits for a few days, see if you can get someone else to start it so you can go and smell the smoke when it comes out.

blue smoke = bad piston rings
light/white smoke = coolant (smells sweet) or oil
dark/gray smoke = overly rich mixture...
The most likely scenario is that you have leaky valve seals and/or injectors (especially the case if you experience lengthy cranking before start) and when you let the car sit the oil/fuel pools in the cylinders and makes a smokey mess on startup. Try replacing your PCV valve and be sure not to put more than 4.5 quarts of oil in the engine when you change the oil - other than that ignore it because your other option is to rebuild or replace your engine.

it is has a very light bluish tint, and it smells like oil.... Now my valve cover gaskets are bad, and my buddy was saying that it might just be that the oil is leaking into where the spark plug.. I dunno how true that is...
It's most likely just valve seals, nothing to really worry about IMO. Unless of course you absolutely want to replace them...it'd be a fun learning experience.
