dealer tried to sell me a 6 speed for $34,400

we went into the dealer today to order the car and he started off by offering to sell the car to us for $34,400 i think it was. he insisted he couldnt go much lower. thankfully he allowed me to use his computer and i showed him some 6 speed prices people on the ORG have gotten. i showed him the first 2 i found ($29,700 and $28,200) both had basically every option. thats when he decided to take off the $4000+ he just added in there for fun. right now we're at $30,500 but my next door neighbor knows the sales manager so we're going in to talk to him tomorrow. even if we dont get a better deal after talking with he manager, $30,500 isnt bad for a 6 speed with everything but Nav, is it? its not great but i dont think thats a rip off.

that sounds a little steep to me, you won't be getting ripped off but i think $28k would be doable--then again i don't know what area you're in, but in Houston, i woudn't pay that much unless i really had it to spend

Brown's Fairfax Nissan. Go there. They will negotiate. Say you need a car and you are debating between the Maxima and the Honda Accord across the street. Say they are offering the Accord for 28. I bought two cars from them. Don't talk to that big bald black man that works there. He is an ******* and will tell you to go screw yourself because he has a mercedez and he doesn't need your business. They are very desperate for your business and I bet you they will sell you it for 28k.

2k2 pricing

I just placed an order for a 2k2 SE 6-speed with options only of HLSD, floor mats and splash guards. Delivered MSRP is $26,586; I paid $24,000 even. This is in the Milwaukee area. I had a lot of trouble disabusing dealers of a $500 'advertising fee' most of them told me had to be added on to the published invoice price, but this bid comes in at just $100 or so over base invoice. (Of course, I don't have the car yet, either--just placed an order.) I think, for now, published invoice may be about as good a price on a new Maxima as can be had.

Watch out for Browns tho, when I went to get my 2K1, I put a down payment on a Max. It was a rare car, only 3 on the east coast and when I came back the next day to pick it up - they said they had sold it even tho I had a down payment on it. Ended up having to go to CT to get it - I live in Arlington.

$30K is too much! I paid everything loaded w/o navigation and it cost me $27900, and this includes delivery charge also. And my car is automatic, so a 6 speed should be even lower. Shop around.

we walked away from Rosenthal. they insisted they could sell the car for $33,000 or $34,000 "all day long". we called browns and the salesman told me the 6 speed isnt even out yet the dealers here are pathetic.

I went to Carpoint and got the Invoice/MSRP for the 2K2 Max with your options and it comes out to be 26,187.00 MSRP & 23,556 invoice. This includes Destination Charge but no $500 Advertising Fee.
So, you basically paid $56 below Dealer Invoice which included the advertising charges...right?!

I live in Chicagoland area. Mind sharing the dealer name.
Thanks and Congratulations!

The dealer is Russ Darrow Nissan, 9301 W. Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee, 414-357-6000. The salesman to be sure to ask for is Ron Brock, and you can mention my name (Greg Iverson) if you like; I wouldn't bet on getting a decent price from other sales personnel there, but I think you can count on Ron Brock.

The delivered MSRP on the car I ordered is $26,586 (includes HLSD [whose invoice price isn't listed on most sites yet, but MSRP is $399], carpeted floor mats, 4 splash guards). I figure the invoice including the so-called $500 advertising fee is $24, 427; excluding the advertising fee, invoice is $23,927. So at $24,000, I got it for either $427 under invoice (advertising fee included) or $73 over invoice (advertising fee disregarded). Either way, it's just a hair under 10% off of MSRP.

how bizarre

in today's paper they had 2002 SE's listing at 26,137, selling for 22,195--the GLE which cost more was a little over 4 grand off list. looks like some serious gouging is happening for 6-spd I guess.

Wow. Where, exactly, are you finding these prices? (I'd be suspicious that they're really talking about 2001 models...)

northern VA is terrible

well, we made a deal with the guys at Brown's Fairfax Nissan. i showed both dealerships (Brown and Rosenthal) all the prices that you and others on the ORG paid for your cars and they insisted that you ALL were lying. i showed them that not a single person paid over $30,000 for their car but it was all lies to them. im kind of annoyed that i couldnt get a deal like you all did. its amazing how much we had to argue to get them below $31,000! after 5 hours arguing with the salesmen over the last 2 days the best price i could get was $30,000 even. everything (processing fees, freight...etc)but tax and tags included. Black on Black leather with everything but Nav. im livid that i hard to work this hard to get a not-so-good price. but i got anxious so i said okay. we made a "deal" but its not set in stone yet and thats what im worried about. im afraid the salesman wont follow through. ah well....im pretty fricken excited nonetheless.

Newman96Se,

Don't forkup no more than $28,5k. That's with tax and license. Keep
negotiating and go to different dealers. Another thing if you're
going to buy it, buy it at the end of the month and the last hour
before the dealership closes. That's when they'll negotiate quickly
and in your favor just so they can close the dealership and go home.
If you hit them early in the morning they'll jack you all day. Good
luck!!!

Mike

Newman96Se,

Don't feel too bad, I'm in the same boat as you!

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and
I got exactly the same price you did, $30000---
everything but tax and tags included. Mine is
tungsten blue/frost interior, 6spd, HLSD, and
everything else except navigation. Unfortunately
for me, I ordered it before the 9/11 incident
(before the economy went to hell), and I didn't
have much bargaining power. The MSRP came out
to be $30,800, and the manager insisted that $800
off MSRP was a "great" deal for a "hot" car. I've
already paid a deposit, so I'm stuck with it! BUT
I'm still excited about it, and I'm hoping that
I'll get the car in January (though February
seems more realistic). Congratulations to all
you guys who were able to get your cars at or
near invoice. Looks like I'll be paying $2000-
$3000 more than you guys!

the "hot" car thing was really getting to me. they kept saying that over and over. thats why they werent willing to bargain very much since its such a "hot" car. when i was talking with my dad about it he actually said that northern VA, NYC and San Fran are probably the 3 worsts places to buy something like a car. so it makes me feel better that someone in my same situation paid the same amount

The sales manager was really confident that he
could sell the "hot" car. He wouldn't budge a
penny below $30k--- because he kept on claiming
that the 6spd HLSD's will be "flying out of the
door." I'd heard that Nissan wasn't going to
be building too many 6spd HLSD's, so I said to
heck with it, and took his offer ($800 below
MSRP--- take it or leave it). At least the sales
manager I dealt with didn't try to BS me with a
$34000 sticker price. He asked me what options
I wanted, and he told me what the MSRP was, and
how much he was willing to take off the MSRP.
I hope you get your car in January!

Just **** all the dealerships together and to go to Carmax. They have straight up pricing. It's pretty good.

Re: Re: Re: Re: northern VA is terrible

It must be a manual tranny thing, because the ads in the paper show roughly 3500 to 4 grand off list--I assume their auto. My bro' in Hartford CT said Maxima SE 255 hp 26 list, 22 something right in the paper. I didn't check the Philly paper because I don't get it delivered. But NJ has the low prices too.

I don't understand why this is a hot car when Car & Driver shows the 2002 I35 to do 0-60 in the 7's.

Me, the looks still are not there and if someone wanted 30 g's for a Nissan Maxima, I'd rather get a German car which doesn't depreciate nearly as much. How much is the 6-spd Sentra gonna sell for under this logic, 22k?

What is interesting is the 350Z, which is supposed to compete with the Boxster S yet stay around 30k. That I could understand if it goes for list when it comes out in the summer.

How many 4-door cars around the $30K range come
available with:

255HP, 246 ft/lbs of torque;
6spd manual;
HLSD;
sport tuned suspension (OK, it's definitely not as
as good as Audi and BMW)--- but an RSB and FSTB
will help a lot!

Among the list of cars that I'd like to own:
6spd S4,
6spd 540i,
6spd M3,
6spd M5,
6spd HLSD Max,

the Max is the only one that I can afford.
The S4 is closest at around $40K (a $10000
difference).

The 6spd HLSD Max is really not a "hot car,"
but for me it is because my wish list is short
(and generally, expensive).

You said it best, Newman96SE, this car will
definitely make me smile (unfortunately, I
will be paying more).

If you are willing to compromise 6-speed for a "Tiptronic", the Acura TL-Type S is about $1,000 more than the Max. That I guess is for the pretigious logo (Acura) and longer warranty...

So what about warranty work. I'd think that you'd have to go to Canada to get it done. Plus what about the speedo... Also tax's ect...
Sounds like way to much of a hassle.

I'd stick with the check carsdirect.com and have the local dealer beat it trick. Or heck even buy from carsdirect.

Warranty is good in the USA. Candian taxes are refundable. You only have to pay your states local sales tax when you register it. Cost about $250 for a new IP which converts everything to English. When there's $7k on the line I don't see it as being too much hassle.

I had decided to wait until Acura made the 6spd manual
available for the CL-S, unfortunately, my old beater
(Buick Regal) died on me, so I can't wait to compare
the 6spd Max with the 6spd CL-S.

If you're going to wait, you should wait for the G35. It should be out in a few months, and if it starts at 28,000, it should be a great deal....

okay, i said before that i made a deal with Brown's. it was a verbal deal so it wasnt official but basically i promised the salesman i'd buy the car for a certain amount if he found it for me. he said he would find me that car and to call him back in the middle of this week to check up on things. so i called today and guess what...HE DOESNT WORK THERE ANYMORE. i talked with him on saturday and apparently he hasnt worked there since sunday. so needless to say im pretty annoyed. although it could turn out to be a good thing because i think i can get a better deal at the dealership here at school.
