Keep my 95 maxima or not

My transmission recently blew on the way coming back from camping and im 20 with out credit so been having trouble getting me something new so my other option is rebuild my tranny and give my SE a paint job. Has anyone had there automatic tranny blow..how much did it cost them to rebuild it..

Thanks.

what do you mean blow. meaning, the car does not have reverse, 1st gear, all the gears. the car keeps on stalling once in gear? Getting a tranny rebuilt might not be a good idea if you dont know a reputable transmission guy. Best bet would be find a tranny for like $400 and either swap it in yourself, or get someone from the org, or a local mechanic that would charge you around $500-$600 to put a tranny in. But from what i've heard, putting the tranny isn't hard, its just getting enough ground clearance to slide the tranny out from the bottom

Personally I would never have one rebuilt, due to cost (obviously this is assuming I couldn't rebuild it myself). Just spend the ~$100 at a junkyard and get a 'new' one.

Or, swap out to a 5MT for under a grand, problem solved for good.

Mine took a beating

OP:

in all seriousness i would stay away from getting a tranny rebuilt like pmohr said earlier. I swear rebuilt (auto)trannys are never the same tranny after they are opened up. And just getting a used one is alot cheaper route anyways

Just cause your tranny goes doesnt mean your car is shot by any means. Hell a tranny is cake compared to other jobs. And with you saying your credit isnt the best i would just repair you issues vs being stuck with a car and a payment.

Truth.

I'm on number 5 But it's lasted longer than most of the autos have so far, so...

Of the four I had in my car, one was original, second was rebuilt under warranty, third I got for free (just had to drive to the ATL) and the 4th cost me ~$150.

A local (well when I was in MD) yard sells any trans for $80 (with core it's $100), you just have to pull it yourself.

There are probably a dozen auto A32s in that yard at any given time, so it's not hard at all to find one for $100.

get on www.car-part.com and get a used, locking AT tranny for around $500. below are just a few cheapest/nearest (to me) hits - all w/locking differential. non-locking are between $1k-$1.5k average.

don't think about getting into any car payments - you're too young for that.

All defective

I blame it on Maxima gremlins, my car doesn't like automatics. 5 speed has been fine so far though.

Thing is, any idiot with a $40 set of hand tools can rebuild an auto trans for the cost of a rebuild kit and fluid. But for some reason there's this stigma about auto trans', that they're super hard to rebuild or something.

Personally I'd rebuild a dozen autos before I'd ever touch another manual.
