Leaky y-pipe flex section, what's it sound like?

Over the past few months, my car has developed an annoying buzz/rattle from 1900-2200rpms during part throttle acceleration in 1,2, and 3rd gear. I've had others drive my car and it clearly sounds like the noise is coming stright out of the muffler and not from the front. The muffler is the stocker. It makes no other sounds at WOT or at any other rpm. I've pulled the muffler and I can't get anything to rattle inside. I can only assume it's the muffler. I've felt around the flex section and there seems to be no exhaust leak. What's the leaky y-pipe flex section leak sound like?

I think it sounds like a slight "hiss"....I know mine is currently leaking, not sure if the actual piping is cracked or the flex is leaking but upon low RPM acceleration there is a slight hiss, thats my guess.....

Look for sooty marks on the flex section. Mine leaks(again!) and there is a noticable noise right under the shifter area. Maybe I have a crack on the Y somewhere. Whatever it is, it's irritating as hell.

Dave
Mine (the one I gave to theblue) buzzed at lower speeds like you've indicated.

Mine also rattled big time when you got off the throttle to shift...the timing of it and souds was almost BOVish.

But again, that pipe was really bad, and had a bad seal going to the cat.

on a more serious note....

Dave, if you had a leak in your y-pipe you'd know it.....it get's VERY loud and make a burbling sound at any RPM and is VERY VERY loud under WOT....it's also VERY noticable at idle. Notice how much I used VERY...

In short...you'd know if you had a hole in the flex section.

y-pipe leaking

I agree with BriGuyMax, If you y-pipe is leaking it's going to be VERY loud. Jeff has a good idea, crawl under her or get her up on a hoist and check it out. Even if it's a very small leak you will find soot. Also, check your hangers, and move the b-pipe section around a little to see if you can make it rattle. Good luck.

I have that annoying sound too. It happens around 2-3k on 2nd and 3rd gear. My exhaust are stock. The y pipe on the flex section is pretty badly worn. I can see the inside already. It could be the muffler too. I feel the car is a lot slower. That's someting is wrong, but i couldn't figure it out what. Help anyone.

Hey Dave,

I just went to KCIR and ran it!

I got a 14.823@95.31 with a 2.378 60' ft time.

I was nervous and couldn't launch....

I didn't see any maxima's there so I guess you weren't there.

anyhow, come to newcelica to see a more detailed description of my runs and perhaps some of your expert advice about KCIR

Yeah, I would have felt bad selling it to someone, so I gave it to that poor fool.

Might be a good excuse to get an aftermarket Y-pipe and maybe even a catback.
