running a 5.9 dodge dakota

this kid in my school is always telling me when he gets his dodge dakota 5.9 rt that it will blow any car out of the water especially a 4 dr fam sedan with kids pouring out the back seats ....now im curious, the 5.9, is there any way an 99se-l can take it stock and auto? if not should even a 50 shot or some bolt ons be able to take him? thanks and any info on this would be helpful

I raced one with my 5sp manual and won, so I think 50 shot would be ok for an auto!

I thought those dakotas run in the 16s? They're not all that quick. Plus, they get about 12mpg so you can be sure that he's blowing an extra few bux just to try and keep up with you

there faster then 16s my friend raced his stock rt 2001 and ran 15.6 then added and intake and got i think 15.5 or 15.4 but 12mpg he wishes hes getting like between 8-10 lol which sucks it amazes me that a 5.9l 360 can only make 250 hp where as our 3.0l can make 222 hp
dodge must not build very good engines

yeah, i'd bet hes making a lot more torque though.
Still...not worth it.

If youa re stock, he might get you. I see the Dakota R/T 5.9 @ E-Town run 15.6-15.4 STOCK. With at least a intake you will stand a change. If you use a 50 shot, you will walk him completely.

I got burned by a R/T w/ exhaust when i only had a CAI and i was running 15.5's at that time.

Don't race him from a dead stop. Race him out on the highway to 120+ and you will rock him!

That's the V-8 boat anchor for ya. Essentially the same motor for the last 20 years.

Here we go kids...

Some of you might be getting the Dakota R/T confused with the Durango R/t.

The Durango R/T runs from 0-60 in 7.8 seconds. The Dakota R/T is faster. If its a Durango R/T that your racin', you better not lose. (Although you have the slowest 4th gen ) If it is indeed the Dakota you better stay away untill you get some helpful mods. So heres a quick review:

Dakota ownz Durango + Maxima(stock)

Maxima ownz Durango

Durango iz owned by everyone

SVT Lightning Ownz ALL of us

I love these posts....claiming the outcome of every race by magazine times.

plus...where do you get off saying he has the slowest 4th gen?!?!?! Every 99SE-L I've seen around here has been just as fast as any other 4th gen.

Craig...get a clue man....

check out www.dragtruk.com The majority of trucks on ther are big *** motored Dakotas. Dodge is also selling Streetrod packages including a Hemi Crate motor set up for the Dakotas. As ugly as those little $hits are, they are fast. Remember, theres no replacement for displacement........

I have an 99 se-l auto and i raced an 5.9rt on saturday night twice. I doubt you will take him stock, i beat him by a car my mods to 60. Race him from a roll and you should win.

I am just stating that the '99 is the slowest model of the 4th generations. Becuase of the weight, extra emissions ect. It may be minute but it's a fact. Just like the '97 5spd is .1 slower than a '95 5spd. It's not noticable but it's still there.

And about the claiming the outcome of a race...If they were any manuals involved, I WOULDNT assume bro. BUT they are both auto's. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to drive an auto consistantly. That's why I "assumed" the race.

The '99 SE-L auto was never tested so no-one knows if it is actually "slower" than the rest...that's merely speculation.

The fastest STOCK 4th gen EVER is a '97 SE 5-speed that ran 14.7 BONE STOCK....
you are really claiming that 1 tenth between auto tests makes ANY difference at all on the road?!?!?! Come on.....

It also doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that with 345 ft/lbs of torque in RWD pick-up, launching isn't simply mashing the gas....unless you are trying to give somebody a smoke show....

actually no the syclone will run 13.5 second bone stock and 4.6 0-60 from the factory

as for the lightning it will run 14.1 and 0-60 in 5.6

The syclone is the fastes production truck ever made!!

I just go by what I see at the track, and from what I've seen at the track....a BONE STOCK 2001 SVT lightning will run mid to high 13s...have seen as low as 13.5...as for the syclone..the fastest time STOCK I've ever SEEN is 14.1.....I guess you could call it a toss up....but don't go saying that the syclone is the fastest production truck without anything but magazine numbers to back you up....

There is a replacement for displacement, it's called a single FAT TURBO!

Have fun waiting for that heavy-*** turbo to spool up while I burn by you . By the time i'm by you I have enough momentum and speed to stay ahead. Big turbos are not always the best option. Remember that. Twin-turbo is much better. Have a small turbo spool up instantly, give a quaint amount of boost, then let the big kahuna come in and add to the fun . Now that's a turbo setup i'd like. Just be careful you don't blow up your engine...turbos are very hard are cars.

RT's are pretty quick. My friend has a quad cab V8 and it rips me up off the line, and he'll beat me up to 60 mph but I'll usually take him after that. Also, is that GMC truck called the typhoon or the cyclone, are they 2 different things or is it the Typhoon?
