got a quote from Aamco for $1695 to conduct teardown reseal and flush. they're not sure what's wrong until they open it up what else might be needed. comes with 1yr warranty. so the minimum is $1695 plus any broken parts they find. any other ideas, I'm not a DIYer.

 

Why not just get a used auto trans?

You can get a brand new trans from Nissan for not much more, if you're into spending that much money. Probably a better warranty, too.

FWIW 95% of that is labor, most of the rebuild kits I've used are in the ~$200 range. It's actually extremely easy to rebuild an automatic, more so than a manual (IMO).

I've never dealt with car-part.com for expensive parts so don't know if I can trust that the dealer states only 50k miles for example. also, any idea on how much a shop will charge to install? I don't want to get involved. I probably mess it up more if I did it. I don't mix with fluids too well. thanks

 

Book time is 6.6 hours to R&R the trans, plus shop supplies, fluid, disposal fees, whatever extra they tack on, etc.

You'll have to call a shop to get any sort of accurate price quote.

And you're not trusting car-part, that's basically just a search engine for junkyards. Call up the individual yard you plan on buying from, see what they say.

Again, car-part is no more responsible for the content on that site than Google is for the content on froogle.

I've gotten a junkyard trans for quite a few vehicles and not had a problem.

 

I've purchased a windshield wiper transmission by searching Car-parts. Led me to a junkie that had the part and it's still working fine after 3 years of service. Some things, I will not buy new for this car so I will search Car-parts first.

 

Buy a used trans and install it or find a reputable shop. Aamco charged my friend 3000 to rebuild the trans in his 92 lexus after it was taken out. More then the car was worth.

I paid $1,100 to have a reputable shop rebuild a auto transmission for one of my mitsubishis. After I got it back.. its was missing about 35mph from its top speed and the rebuild only lasted 30k miles before it kicked the bucket.

I have since bought 3 used transmissions for various cars from salvage yards without any issues. Used FTW

 

It really depends on who builds it. I had mine done at 110,000 kilometres. When it was rebuilt, I had a tranny cooler installed and ran Mobil 1 synthetic from the beginning. It's just passed 250,000 kilometres and has been a very good rebuild. It'll be a bittersweet day tomorrow when I trade her in for an '09.

$1650 plus parts sounds like a lot. If your tranny was messed up then you can obviously expect a decent sized parts list to add to your initial cost.

 

u can get a good used working tranny for about 3-4 bills dude that is to much for a rebuilt

i got a rebuilt tranny put into my 01 dodge ram @ like 100k. Cost me like 2 grand and wasnt much better than before it was replaced. I would always pick used vs. rebuilt.

 

I had to replace mine when I was in Alaska, Nissan charged me $2800 (total; installation n all) for a refurbished (automatic) Transmission.

 

I got a quote from local transmission guy who's recommended, gave me quote of $1500-$2000 for rebuild with 6 month warranty. he charges $400 labor if I bring him used transmission to install but that only comes with 30 day warranty on the part alone. btw the trans is $400 and supposidly only has $76k miles. what to do?

 

hmm. theres no way to REALLY kno how many miles, you just gotta check it out, if it looks like its been messed with i wouldnt do it, if its been painted thats deff a bad sign, i guess you jsut gotta hope it works out. In terms of trannies; 6 months isnt that long, problems are more likely to come up many miles after the warranty expires. i think i would feel alot better buying a used tranny w/ "76K" miles that looks clean rather than buying a rebuild with who knows how many miles.

 

i paid 650.00 for a used trans with 70,000 miles on it and they gave me the vin of the car that it came out of and sure enough, those were true miles. paid 500.00 to drop it in and it was 1,200.00 plus change when done. make sure whoever does it changes the mount and the rear main seal while its apart.

i've done many engine and tranny swaps. Always go with used vs. rebuild. You can source out a fairly low miles tranny for 300-400 and have someone drop it in for 350-450. Make sure you get the pump seal and both axle seals replaced on the tranny and might as well pay to get the rear main seal replaced while tranny is out. I would say parts and labor for everything would be $1,000 at a small repair shop NOT AMMCO.
