Last week i failed inspection for 3 codes, 1 codes was for the knock sensor, and 2 codes for the EVAP. I've managed to take care of the evap codes, but will my car still fail for the knock sensor code? Will NJ fail you just having any code?

I don't know. Why not check on the DMV website for NJ?

If so, just replace the KS and be done with it.

 

Most likely no, as the KS code won't cause CEL.

 

But it does show up as an active code, so when they hook up the OBD equipment, it's likely an immediate red flag.

Their site doesn't specify, but most likely any codes will fail inspection.

 

Hmm, I thought it was just emissions-related ones.

 

For most states, a CEL alone disqualifies you; that would call for any and all codes.

Though if you really look into it, most codes could be construed as being emissions-related.

 

But a Knock sensor wouldn't cause a CEL. Oh, and come to think of it, my GF just passed emissions w/ a bad knock sensor in Va. Of course, that's Va, and not NJ, but I can't imagine there's that much difference.

 

I am from NJ and I think it will cause it to fail. I know that the cel will be off, however there will be the KS code in the system. The bottom line is that you should just replace it anyway. See the other thread "is it worth changing the KS". Find someone with small hands, and it will be a fast job.

If you don't pass just stick a resistor in the KS harness and try again.

 

i live in NY....and i got passed for 1 oxygen sensor out.....and i didnt even know the guys. lol.

 

Meh, I don't have small hands and it was a fairly easy job. Just get extensions + u-joint and you're golden.

 

Okay, so i called a nissan dealership by me who also conducts state inspections. He says that the knock sensor code should not technically fail inspection because it does not activate the check engine light. Going to go to the randolph dmv tomorrow during lunch and find out for sure.

Im from Mass and a KS wont cause you to fail. Hell, if the CEL isnt on then they dont even hook up the OBD hehe

 

NJ scans for any codes. Light on or off, if there's a code you fail.

 

My boy from NJ jus confirmed that. Wow that sucks man....but the KS is easy to change...check the how to threads.

 

I just replaced the KS this past weekend, I'm in NJ, and passed my last inspection last year. Based on the condition of the old KS, I probably needed to replace it at that time, so if you run a tank of ultra first, and reset the ECU, you should be good to go. Defintely replace it.

 

Depends on the year of your max, if you got 95 they might not scan for code. (I did it back in March, I don't think the inspector even found the port.). On the other hand, if you have CEL, you will definitely fail.

That's said, it is a $50 parts from eBay. I replaced mine last year, works great.
