Do our remotes generate random codes?
Do our remotes generate random codes?
I got an email with another internet rumor, that thieves can hijack remote access codes just by picking up the signal when you use it. I automatically go to snopes when I see this stuff, and sure enough, it's largely bogus. http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/lockcode.asp But for early enough models, evidently it's a real risk.
Does anyone know if 4th gens generate the random codes?

The codes are not random, exactly, nor can they be. The car has to know what codes to expect from the remote. Ours are the more secure type described in the article, though. Most things of this sort use a linear algorithm to determine the next code in the sequence, and a thief would need several inputs to determine the pattern, though I am not particularly familiar with automotive remotes.
Yeah, it makes sense that they couldn't be completely random.
Does this mean I have to watch Gone in 60 Seconds to figure out the next thing to worry about??? My Netflix queue is long enough as it is...
