My starter was acting funny in the last couple weeks so I decided to have it rebuilt. I had it done yesterday by a local starter rebuilt shop (refer by another org member) and the Service Engine Soon light came on.

I stopped by my mechanic today and he tested it for me. He said it was the KS and intake air temp sensor. Is it possible to cause by the starter rebuilt? Or maybe some connection is loose?

 

Your air intake temp sensor is unplugged. It fits into the air intake duct leading to the radiator support. When this is removed to gain access to the stater, it sometimes doesn't get reconnected. I am willing to bet that is what happened to you.

 

After a lot of search, I finally found a thread that state the location of the IAT sensor.



I checked the car and it looks like the IAT is intact. Unfortunately I couldn't reach it. I figure I need to remove the upper part of the intake box in order to reach it. Wed is a holiday so I probably will do take it out to check, as well as clean the TB.

One side note, I noticed the whole intake snorkel is very loose. In my previous Max, even with the two clips removed, I don't recall it was that loose. The end where the IAT is feels like it is completely detached from intake box. Maybe that's the reason?

 

It doesn't matter if the intake snorkle is detached, but the sensor could pose problems. I'm also going to agree with the post above about it probably being forgotten and left unplugged by your starter guy.

 

I don't like the idea of the mechanic reads it,have the codes by yourself and get exact codes...then report them bach ... much better and trusty

Honestly. I've never had my IATS connected to anything, it just dangles in my engine bay since i don't have a snorkel. and it has Yet to throw a code...

 

Is your Service Engine Soon light on?

 

Your sensor is plugged in. It doesn't matter if it's not in the snorkle or not.

His is probably completely unplugged, hence the code.

Your sensor is still giving readings.

 

you need to plug the pigtail into the plug.
the IAT plug is not essential to the running of the motor, you could put it in the intake or not or whatever you want.
you need to plug it back in, or it might be busted.
and those are the ONLY 2 codes? if so then you might want to change the knock sensor, but ONLY if you have no other codes.

also your mechanic is fine for reading codes, sounds like he just made a mistake when he was installing the starter.

 

FTR it's a different sensor in a different location on 95/96's

 

dude. wtf is up with mechanics leaving chit unplugged??? i bet he had a couple nuts and bolts left over too??? it took less than 30 min to replace my own starter. cant say the same about the EGR. DOH! lot's of bloody knuckles

 

Yesterday I removed the upper portion of the air filter box and checked the IAT and it looks like it is intact. I even unplugged the connector and plug it back in and it seems fine. I still got the light though. Do I have to reset it or will it re-check the sensor and clear the code if it is ok?

 

disconnect and reconnect negative (black) cable of battery before you go to sleep. as you are driving the next day, it should stay clear if there are no issues.

Well, looks like the IAT sensor is toasted. I disconnected the battery Sunday night and plugged it in yesterday. I still got the light...

 

The IAT sensor may have been broken during starter removal/installation, if you have an ohmmeter, the sensor should measure approximately 2500 ohms at 68F. If it does not you need to replace the sensor or just stick a 2500 ohm resistor in there.

is it for the same codes?
have you tried manualy erasing the codes? unplugging the battery never wiped mine for some reason.

 

I suspect I'm having starter issues too and trying to read up on it. Did you get your issue solved?

Which issue? the starter? Yeah, I got it rebuilt. As for the IAT sensor, no, I am still trying to figure it out. I didn't get the IAT sensor problem when I replaced the starter on my previous '97 Max.
