1996 Maxima - "Sputtering" Starting Car
Hi all,
Thanks for reading.
For the past two weeks, it's become increasingly difficult to start my '96. When I turn the key in the ignition, the car no longer starts right up. It seems to "sputter", and "choke", but after 5 seconds it starts up and the engine seems to be running fine.
My check engine light came on just recently and gave a code for the knock sensor and a manufacture part. After trying to clear the codes, the knock sensor was the only one to stay on.
Also, the car will not even start sometimes. A friend of mine suggested turning the key in the ignition, putting the car in drive, back into park, pulling the key back and out of the ignition, and then try turning on. When I do this, the car then turns on. The friend said this had to do something with a link chain and it just needed simply to be tightened?
My main concern is the "sputter-choke" noises when starting up my Maxima. I really want to resolve this issue before my car doesn't start at all (I commute to work everyday).
Any tips, tricks, assistance, and/or help would be greatly appreciated. Would anyone know what car parts I may need to have replaced to fix the trouble starting issue?
Thanks.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll be sure to try out each other.
@thegodson1 I recently had my knock sensor changed with a new one, about 5 or 6 months ago. It really bothers me to know I have to change it again. I'll change it and let you know how it goes.

So, I came out one morning to my Maxima and it wouldn't start at all. The starter finally had gone. Tried hitting it with a hammer, too - completely dead. I changed it out, and my baby runs like a champion now. It takes less than a second to start up, and with oomph!
Hope that helps anyone who may be experiencing the same problem I was.
