No more clear tails for me

Bought a pair of smoked tails from pimpin02max (great price, fast shipping!) so I guess in a day or two I'll put my old ones up for sale.

Guess I'll need to update my sig pic now.

I bought them from pimpin02max, not sure where he got them.

Once you pull back the insulation from the tail lights, you can see the four 8 mm bolts and the wiring harness. Unclip, unbolt and then you have to push pretty hard to get the lights to move outward due to the silicone adhesive they use at the factory to prevent water leakage.

Since so much of that goop was left behind around the hole where the lights go, I didn't add any more silicone but I will monitor for leakage to see if I need to add some.

Thanks, and I actually think he used the VHT NiteShades Please let me know if you do ever run into problems with leakage

Not sure about that, these aren't modified OEM tails, had a "made in Taiwan" sticker on the back of them.

I like the way those look on the darker color Max's, but I still prefer the clear tails on the lighter colors, especially the silvers.

That's the big irony.. we with the 3.0 engine always wanted to have the 3.5, and the 3.5 guys always wanted our smoked tails. Looks realy nice.

Why bother with the hassle an expense of getting LED bulbs in these tails? They really wont make much of a difference visually or electrically. They only reason I see in getting LED tail bulbs would be for the COMPLETELY clear tail lights that you can find on Ebay which only look good on silver or white maximas. (pics coming soon)

You can always (usually) tell based on the thicker Nissan symbol on the tail end.

@ OP: I like the black ones a lot. The clear ones aren't bad either though. I want smoked tails for my Sunlit Sand

Perhaps. But I think the consideration is related more to color than model. The lighter colored Maxima works well with clear tails, and the darker colored Maxima tends to complement black tails. For example, your white 5th gen would look awesome with clear tails. Maybe you can buy Scott's?

It would have been creative of Nissan to offer taillights as an option.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there John. I think Lontar's tails look great as is. The black matches the tinted windows and the black tires. And I love the contrast with the white. I think he should get smoked corners instead of the clear corners to match.

I put in the black tails on my sterling mist and would never go back to the clear. They look so much better with my smoked corners and tinted windows, and they dont have that crappy orange in them.

Scottwax, how much are you planning on selling your 5.5's for? I might be interested. I've got plans for a possible custom taillight setup that I'd need a set of the clear tails for...and I don't want to butcher my only set to find out that it won't work.

Oh, btw. Are you planning on swapping out those amber bulbs for some clears that blink orange?

I'd let them go for $75 plus shipping. The lights are in superb condition (no scratches, highly polished) other than a spider that managed to work it way inside the driver's side light. I'll have to hit up Pep Boys for the clear/silver bumbs that blink orange.

I agree with the others that like the clear tail lights on lighter colored cars, like pearl, silver or gold.

Nope. DOT requires a red reflector, not bulb, to be visible.

DOT also says that there are to be NO modifications to headlights. Its about on the same level of illegality... if a cop wanted to pull you over that desperately for not having a reflective strip... he could find ANYTHING else to pull you over even if your tails were stock. Ive had many cops behind me on the road during the day and night. Ive never had a problem.

Obviously i needed to get Red and amber LED tail lights to make them flash properly. Tails were about 100 on ebay, perfect fit easy install and i got my LEDS and wiring (6 ohm resistors/loaders) from www.superbrightleds.com

They are easily the best purchase ive made for the max paired up with the clear sides w white LEDS (even more illegal because they dont shine red/amber)

Havnt been pulled for those either, call me lucky i guess

I took the handle of my screwdriver and pulled back with all my might. The rubber butyl is really really strong.

I'd like to smoke mine with a flat black tint/finish.
But I keep hearing mixed thing about how there illegal or i'd get ticketed.
Anyone know for CA laws? Because my neighbor offered to do them for me
