What's up 5th gen, I posted a thread in Advanced Handling for those who have D2 coilovers with some basic questions regarding installation.

Ive had my d2s on for about 3k miles and the rear passenger side is squeaking/clanking and driving me absolutley crazy, I think I am going to buy those ES spring coil isolators and hope for the best. Besides the noise my car is slammed and Im in boston and the car rides pretty damn good.

Also depending on how you set up the rear coilovers when the car is lifted in the air, if the perch is touching the spring then it'll cause excess noise.
Stumbled across this picture, pretty informational regarding adjustment...
Yeah, what is showing in the pictures above....that is only part of the top mount you need. You need to still use the stock mount.
What's up guys - I put the front ones on. I have em set to full-soft so they ride just fine. However I'm getting a groaning/grumbling noise over certain parts in the road from my passenger side coilover and I'm wondering if it's the pillowball mounts. The driver's side is dead silent.
Has anyone had this issue before? I'm gonna take a look and make sure everythings still tight but I wanted to check with the .Org to see what to look for first.

Groaning and grumbling sounds like what my strut mounts have been doing since I re-used them putting my springs in.
Have you checked all the bushings in the front end, too? I can see a drop potentially causing a bad bushing to start making noise.
Inspect This.

Anyways, the front coilovers have their own pillowball mounts so those could be the cause of the noises, but I'm not sure. I'm gonna grab some 3-in-1 oil and grease them up, and check the hex bolts (height adjustments).

What kinda rims, btw?
They are G35 sedan rims, 17s. Whatcha think?
Hell yeah! Looks like you're gunna have to hook me up with a ride someday. I've been waiting for the chance to ride in a Max w/ coilovers before I jump the gun on some. I'll be hitting you up once school stops sucking.
Update, I think my right side coilover is blown
It's bouncy and making noises, I noticed the instructions I posted above said to make sure there's no preload on the front springs so I'm gonna be checking that as well. Could that be it, if I readjusted the perch would that fix the issue? I readjusted the perch on the left side and it rides rock solid.
But only the right side is bouncy, I adjusted the stiffness and it's still bouncy. Ergggh

Check it:
See if yours is similar. My mom's Altima has blown struts in the front end, and it rides pretty bouncy-like. And rattles a whole lot.
Btw, the rims look pretty good, that's why I asked. The tires look a bit skinny, though.
But it may be because I have slightly oversized tires on my Max.How much have you driven the coilovers?

We all know mods never go as planned.I got the same way about my headers, and I was about to give up. But it all worked out in the end.
Have you tried the basic push-on-the-car test to see how it rebounds versus the left side...? And to listen for any odd noises like fluid boiling out?

Don't get too let down about it.

Haven't checked for any fluid ish...I'm 99% sure the noise coming from the right side is pillowball action.
Check your perches like you said you were going to, but it sounds to me like it's blown. But it might be rebuildable. Your best bet is to go out and check around the coilover for fluid with a flashlight. It'll be pretty obvious when you spot it if it is actually leaking.

perkman, are you selling your old coilovers now that you got new ones?

D2 will rebuild them, I have to see what the turnaround on those are. Or maybe find someone whos selling just a pair.
I'm bumping this thread.
I bought a new strut core from D2, to rebuild my blown coilover. Does anybody know how to separate the pillowball mount off the old strut core? I've tried for hours.
Thanks!

My logic is that some people have bought D2s, installed them and took em right back off because it turned the car into a pogo stick because of the wrong preload. I'm praying that releasing the spring a little more will solve that issue.

Too bad I sold mine...I had a full set, plus two spare struts/shocks.
UGH! Really!? Well you're an .Org OG and I'm relatively new to the game...And yes D2 is great with that, I spoke with them and they answer instantly, they sent me the strut core and they answered all my questions. Awesome customer service.
Update. Got the car aligned, no noises to speak of.
I'm going to get the rears ready. I'll check the spring isolators to see if they're damaged, I have one pair of new ES ones and I need to get another pair, but a lot of places are saying it will take ~4 weeks to have them
For the rear ones I have to use the OEM upper mounts. Do they require modification? Should I buy new rear upper mounts or get a spring compressor and use my old ones?
Thanks guys.

The actual metal plate itself is completely reuseable, and I don't think they're very cheap from Nissan, either.
As far as the inner strut mount, I would pull the strut apart and check it out.
You can rent a spring compressor from Autozone for $50, and get your deposit back when you return them. It's really not that difficult of a job with a few air tools and a few spare hours.

You don't need them. A ratchet on the spring compressors is perfectly fine.
The impact wrench will just make quick work of compressing/uncompressing the spring. I tried using a ratchet, get fed up with fighting, and switched to my impact wrench. Compressed, removed, and uncompressed old springs, and then re-installed new springs in about 25-30 minutes with this method after I'd gotten the strut off the car.

Oh, well, I mean yeah.
If you wanna be this guy:

When you remove the top mount, you need to compress the springs because the top mount is what's keeping them from exploding off the strut.
A word of advice, though: loosen the top strut mount nut on the rear struts before removing them from the car. I made the mistake of not doing that, and the strut just spun in the housing. A good breaker bar will make quick work of the nut.
Of course, the alternative is to unbolt the bottom part of the strut, then remove the top nut and let the strut grenade off into the ground.

Bumpage.
So I got a new spring perch for my rear coilovers and I'm waiting on my second pair of ES spring isolators.
I'm having some trouble fitting the isolators on the plates that go ontop of the spring. They are a very very tight fit. Do I need to use a grease or something to help get them on?
I ordered the part number 9-6103 Spring isolator which is what was recommended to me by looslip (guy who sold me the coilovers)
Any words of advice on how to attack this? Has anyone with D2s run the ES spring isolators?

Okay. I just got off the phone with D2, they cannot sell me their OEM spring isolators and their new spring perch is the same one they run on every coilover they sell.
They said I don't need isolators on the bottom coilover (which is fine) but I need them on the top plates, and my ES ones aren't fitting.
Their OEMs have been discontinued, and I can't even get the complete top mounts from them since it takes 6 weeks for them to get ahold of it. So basically I'm screwed.
Edit. What would happen if I ran with just the top plates and the associated hardware, but without the rubber isolators between the spring?

Update.
Put the rears on, install was easy. I ran without isolators on the top, and I don't have an isolator on one side below the spring. Holy **** noise! Sounds like AK's firing
Also, they're seized up pretty bad so I cannot adjust the ride height
Now I need to call D2 and ask them for a new spring perch and try and remedy this height problem. Already soaked them with WD40 does any body have other ideas?
