Port and polished heads? 3.5 cams?

im considering going to the junk yard and picking up heads and rebuilding them...and then port and polishing. anyone on the org done this to their cars? how much gain am i looking at?

also i saw somewhere in a thread someone suggesting 3.5 cams. do they fit in our car? does it create higher overlap or what?

VQ35 cams need special adapters to fit in a VQ30. They generate more lift (the valves open more), duration (the valves stay open longer), however I'm not sure how much overlap there is.

Check the cam specs thread in the All Motor section.

Overlap depends on the cams. Some of the OE 3.5 cams run 2* of overlap. Others run more.

Regarding the port and polish: I would port very little. Polish a lot. Overall, the ports are not too bad. The exhaust ports need work, but the intake's are decent. Polishing on the other hand will help more for the time required.

dude, it's so much less work, less money, and will yield more power to just put a 3.5 in the car. Doing so gets you:

much better heads than the 3.0
more aggressive cams
an extra .5L displacement

You could just throw in a 80K 3.5 engine but the thing i like about the head DIY projects is that you get almost "free" hp and better throttle response when done correctly.Along with an extended head life and better running car.Unless you did a 3.5 swap and did the head work..Me personally, I'd rather have a few extra hp and the security of knowing your head is brand new and upgraded. Its a good feeling to do it yourself.

* I'm also unemployed and want sh*t to do..So I may do this as well. =]
