How did I mess up my transmission?

I installed a transmission cooler, new filter screen and a normal transgo shift kit. 1-2 shift great but slips from 2-3.

I installed the kit on a spare VB that I purchased. Drilled and replaced springs.

I first drained all the fluid, disconnected the out going line from the stock cooler and ran a hose to an oil bowl. Started the engine for no longer than 20 seconds to let some of the fluid drain into the bowl.

After the job was completed I put in 5+ quarts till it hit the bottom of the dip stick. Test drove around the block and filled it but it went past the hot mark.

Can the extra fluid be causing the slipping or did I burn something up?

Edit: I put a total of 7.5 quarts in. I forgot to mention that.

yp, sounds to me like you overfilled. that should'nt cause a slippage tho, drain some out until it hits the hot mark and drive to test it.

I mean seriously......dont know about A/T, but M/T apparently takes 4.8 qts.....you should see what 0.2 of fluid looks like. Its just not worth leaving back in the bottle at all. I would be surprise if that was your problem.

I forgot to say that I put in 7.5 quarts. I didn't think tha it was too much with the cooler. I also drained nearly a quart from the pan after removing it and lots from the VB assembly. I'll drain some from the tranny cooler line.

After drainging about 3 to 4 quarts from the pan did you replace that drained fluid before starting the engine to drain from the return cooler hose? If you didn't then you temporarily ran the trans without enough fluid.
After draining from the pan you need to immediately replace that fluid, then you run the engine to have the return hose flush out about 2 quarts at a time. Those 2 quarts flushing from the return hose also needs to be repalced immediately.

I would suspect that's your problem.
It's the only thing you changed on your shall we assume otherwise properly working transmission.
Put the stock VB back in and see how it shifts.
