I am also on the hunt for a new cat back exhaust but have no interest in the header/y pipe route as it changes the sound of the exhaust and not really for the better, although that is up to the owner of said car to decide.

The two exhausts I have found to sound the best without being to loud have both been discontinued...the Stillen and Apexi WS2, I have searched endlessly online for each and have come up empty on all accounts.

I am currently looking at the GReddy SE "spectrum elite" and trying to judge the sound level of it but most people already have the header and y pipe installed which changes everything.

Let me know what you found out and if anyone knows of a Stillen cat back (not just the b pipe) for sale with low miles...let me know!!

I run the WS Y pipe, with a custum 2.5in catback to a 24in(i think) magnaflow muffler to a 4in tip. This is Quite LOUD. If you wanted to go quieter then you could add a glasspack to the pipe about 1 ft after the cat where the first OEM one is. This was about 350 from my exhuast shop, go to one of your local shops and ask em, they know what they are doing. For the most part...

So many exhaust threads..........

Greddy too expensive for no real gains. My boy has one for 03 v6 altima and paid 800/installed.

I have a bullet straight thru muffler i bought for 20 bucks.
We got the same exhaust note. Mine even came with a silencer. Never needed it cuz its not loud. Its definitely audible when im on it, but not loud at all. Good performance too, no losses on the low side.

Y-pipe with a high flow muffler is best exhaust mod. If u buya catback with no resonator, it will get loud. Get a glasspack to quiet it back down.

You have a vid of your exhaust setup?
Curuious to hear it, not many on here have had too much luck with good exhaust tones from no named mufflers.
Adding a muffler or catback wont really give you any real gains.
Removing the precats will, a y pipe is the best bang for the buck. Yes headers give gains over the y pipe, but some feel the costs of headers over the Y pipe doesnt justify the price difference or the labor to install.

Ive owned the Apexi WS2 and the Greddy SP1, and they both sounded very similiar. So much that I simply kept the Greddy and sold the WS2.

First off just a cat back or muffler is not loud. The tone will be deep and smooth, louder than stock yes, but not OMFG loud. Now once you install a Y pipe all hell breaks loose and everything changes. I had a glass pack muffler back in the day. That was my only exhaust mod at the time. My buddy had a Greddy SP1 cat back. Side by side the cars sounded nearly identical. I paid $20 he paid $600. So for sound toss on any muffler youd like.

Now I got a Warp Y which made the car two, maybe three times as loud. Also the tone went to ****. It was all drony, burpy, poopness. How I hate the unequal Y pipes we have. I got a Dynomax super turbo muffler which was OK. The chambered design kept a good bit of the poopness down. I had it with a Stillen B which is non resonated.

With equal length headers the tone will be much more pleasant and smooth.

Weird, when I did the y pipe the tone just got a bit deeper, nothing real loud at all. When I went to headers, I couldnt tell a difference at all in tone.
Even right now running a 3" setup, its nowhere near as loud as I had heard it would be, but it does have some drone at certain rpms.
Ive heard some Maximas in person with some knock off mufflers and they sounded like dookie, typical fartcans.

i have a 98 with the spectrum elite from greddy. i do have headers and a y-pipe and the sound is definitely not a fartcan sound. it sounds really nice. i will put a video up. finally got my camera back. well you'll see it tomorrow.

without headers and a y-pipe, the sound is not noticeable. it is soooo light even when you floor it. the headers and y-pipe really made it deeper and gives it a mean sound hehe.

$660 for just an exhaust... plus headers and y-pipe... why not? hehe\
beats the fartcan sound... seriously

Amazon has a big sale going on on Flowmaster and Magnaflow

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1996878

I don't know if there is anything for a Maxima owner but the people are reporting steals on stuff they do need.

Exhaust should have bass, not poopness.....

And u shdnt be able to hear someone's exhaust 5 blocks up the street. It must suck to be riding around in a car that loud.....

If u got no resonator, i think it would def be louder than what it should be. Glasspack resonator like 20 bucks ebay.

How can you have a 3" setup with an SP?

Every single Maxima I have heard with a Y pipe and cat back has sounded like absolute ****. Especially with straight through mufflers like Stillens. Most of the time a Maxima with an equal length Y pipe or equal length headers has sounded like sex. The unequal Y pipes add a horrid tone to the exhaust note. The pulses get mixed up and throw the sweet rumble into raspy Pontiac drone gurgle. The stock Y is not really equal but the cats, restrictions, and bends mellow the sound down considerably.

I "had" a Greddy SP1 catback which I sold here recently. Thats why I said
Ive owned the Apexi WS2 and the Greddy SP1,
. Im now running a custom 3" setup, this is my third exhaust setup.
I used to get compliments on my setup all the time, people always asked me what it was cause the liked its deep tone.
No one in my area has equal legnth headers other then myself so I cannot comment on how those setups sound. I guess mine will always sound a bit different being boosted.

i dont know why people wouldnt want the car louder when they want an exhaust. when i think exhaust the last thing on my mind is the sound, especially since the maxima is a V6. but to answer your question custom maxima make a replica GReddy Evo exhaust and claim to have the same performance and sound. its about half the price of the actual GReddy Evo. i've owned a GReddy Evo and had it on my civic and it sounded great. quiet at normal driving but had a little roar when you open up the throttle...

I had a evo2 exhaust on my 95 fitted to it since it was for the newer Maxima's. It was nice sounding when coupled with the warpspeed y pipe, but then I sold it and got a custom 2.5" magnaflow cat back on it and it sounded better and the car seemed to have better pickup on the low end. Just a thought.

In MASS, there is one major reason to keep the noise down......

Hell, they even give u a ticket if u play radio too loud.
