What is a cat back exaust system???

Ok my question is I'm wondering what a cat back exaust system is and what makes it better than a normal exaust system????? I'm kinda new to this whole modding cars thing so sorry if this is a stupid question...

It is new piping from the catalytic converter back, and a muffler. The piping has mandrel bends, so air flows more easily. The muffler is usually free-flow also. The result, louder, deeper sound, and about 5-8 hp.
