engine over rev safety?

i noticed a few days ago, a slight misfire from a bad coil, nothing too serious, but notorious w our cars. so i eventually get the check engine light (today), and it got bad. so i replaced it, and tried to rev the engine to listen to it after the replacement coil...i hit around 6500 rpm, maybe a lil more, and i noticed the car turned off. i did this twice, and both times, the car shut off when the rpms came to idle.

is this some sort of safety? my car runs perfectly otherwise mechanically. no cel codes, the only two that came up were cyl 1 misfire, and knock sensor, which i gather was a ghost code, because its gone with the check engine light.

************UPDATE***********

I still have the misfire issue, i will check the plug tomorrow to see if its messed up as well...and to my question up there ^^, if the car were to stall out from the revving, the accessory lights would come on...that is not the issue here, which makes me think it is that safety

I have had this happen to me before, but I dont think its normal. The reason mine was doing it was because my maf was bad.

The car should definitely not shut off after you hit the rev limit. When the car hits 6500 rpm, it cuts the fuel to the injectors to limit the speed of the engine. But as soon as the engine speed drops below 6500, everything should continue operating normally.

no i didnt reset the ecu...today i bought new plugs, and the problem seems to be gone. but i noticed theres "hot spots" on the side of coils 1, 3, 5. i replaced 1...it looks like ill be buying 2 more soon...i did test coil 5 and "G and IB" connectors showed around 6 megaohms.
