whats the REAL DEAL when it comes to VG mods?

alright i know the CAI/Ypipe is the real deal, but ive read alot of debating about the UDP and catback exhaust..i was thinkin maybe a WSP Bpipe with 2k stocker/Apex'i N1..BUT are these mods even anygood, and is the pulley worth $200?

Re: whats the REAL DEAL when it comes to VG mods?

Technically speaking no one yet has dynoed a fully modded VG maxima. Now I've seen a couple of modded NA Z31s but hardly any 5spd VGs. Here is a link to find the nearest dyno center to you http://www.dynojet.com/lauto.shtml. If you really are serious about modding your car you should take this time to get a baseline dyno done. I baselined my 87 auto max at 112fwhp/140fwtq (stock flywheel power is 152hp/168tq), my mods at the time were K&N panel and timing advance. During this time I was running 17.2-17.4s @ 78mph. Later on I dynoed my car with a cone filter and lost 2hp/3tq, however I was running 17.0-17.1s @ 79mph. Then I dynoed my car again after installing my CAI which resulted in 123fwhp/153fwtq with an average gain of 14hp/9tq from 4000-5500rpm. My 1/4 times dropped from 17.0@ 79 to 16.7 @ 81mph. After that I wasnt able to dyno the car again. However after adding a 60mm TB, UR UDP, 2.5in high flow cat + catback I dropped my 1/4 ET to a 16.312 @ 80mph (my previous run was 16.357 @ 82.25mph but I shifted 2-3 at 6400rpm by accident so it killed my trapspeed). The exhaust helped my car alot but then again I had over 200k miles, I believe the UDP work great to my mom was able to notice a difference in throttle response.

I agree however I probably would have ran in the 15.6-15.9 @ 84-87mph. Just think I had the VB mod in the works along with getting a 50 nitrous installed. It would have been 14s or bust but it never came to be .

I would advise not to get the Apexi N1.. It makes your car sound like rice.

i kinda thought it might..i had a ApexI dunk on my eclipse GSX and sounded pretty trashy and my friend has it on his supra but both cars had low compression and were on their way out..but anyway..i have a 91 se 5spd,i have no reason to believe the engine has any probems or low compression or anything,i was runnin 16.7 stock with bad 60 ft times if you remember nismo..i plan on gettin a ACT clutch somewhat soon cause i kinda messed mine up when my slave cylinder went and then the clutch hose..and i really need the CAI and Ypipe...i personally belive from what i have read these mods alone with the right 60ft times can get me high 15's,am i dreamin??? after that i wanted to get the mods that dont do much but will maybe add up at the end such as wires, plugs, maybe gettin a spare manifold and getting it ported, synthetic oil..then finish the power mods off with a cat&catback...and if im really nearing the low 15's which i doubt maybe just shellin the money out for the JWT cams..all this combined with slicks and maybe either ECU upgrade or advanced timing...close to 14's all motor VG? i guess only time will tell but your guys opinions will be helpfull

from my experience it'll take more than the cams and slicks...you might have to crack open the block and do some more "internal" work besides the cams. my friends 5spd VG was running 15.7's with advanced timing, MSD SCI, exhaust, STS, clutch upgrade and CAI.....thats a lot of mods, but still only high 15's, thus leaving only the ECU, cams and slicks to get another .7 seconds off for 14's! I dunno, if it can be done, but I'll be the first to give you mad props if you can do it!!!

14s can be done in a VG 5spd but

It will require around 150-160fwhp/165-180fwtq at least in addition to some weight reduction. For example a stock VQ 5spd dynos around 160fwhp/170fwtq with their light weight of ~3000 they can run a 14.8-14.9 with a 2.0-2.1 60ft. Put it this way if you can pull 90-93mph in trapspeed that is enough for 14s provided you have traction.
